I have acquired an old Evinrude yachtwin 4HP which I intend to get running I am not sure of the year the serial number suggests it is early 70s. It has no operating instructions and I am not familiar with the controls and wonder if anyone could help?

There's a lever on the side which has three positions marked stop, start and fast which I'm assuming is the throttle as there is no twist grip. Does anyone know what the controls in the photo below do? They are all connected to the carburettor, the choke is self explanatory but what are the two round knobs for? I' can't see how you take the motor out of gear either, even when the side lever is in the "stop" position the prop shaft still turns when you pull the start chord, maybe it's supposed to I don't know?

You can ID the year from the model number

See the list here http://www.skoterskroten.com/img/arsmodellstabell.pdf

here http://web.archive.org/web/20011207012241/www.evinrude.com/docktalk/modref/modelyr.html

The two knobs are the slow speed mixture (top one ) and the high speed mixture (bottom one)

If the needles are set correctly in the carb you should be able to set both to their half way positions and then not touch them

instructions for setting the carb needles on the iBoats forums at http://forums.iboats.com/engine-fre...sorted-carb-variations-joe-reeves-167352.html

Several other topics that may be of interest to a new owner of an old engine in this list http://forums.iboats.com/engine-frequently-asked-questions-faq-31/

Any OMC engine post 1964 will run on 50:1 but don't be mean with the oil as it may not have needle bearings throughout

A 1970 model 4hp has a fixed drive.. no reverse and no clutch

These old 4 hp engines are reckoned to be among the best small outboards of any. A very large % of parts are still available and they are well worth looking after.
