In clearing a barn in SW Wiltshire I have uncovered an old Evinrude 20. It's a fairly heavy twin cylinder outboard with a starter motor, it was in running order when put away and the owner seems to have kept it well greased. But that was some years ago and I can't find the electric cable or the fuel hose so I can't prove it's a runner. I don't want to scrap it so how do I offer it as a project? The buy and sell feature on this forum seems to focus on boats rather than bits.

The "for sale" board on these forums perhaps

Other than that ebay

Get the model number off it ( should be on plate on the transom bracket, possibly also on a core plug on the cylinder block) and quote that in any advert. That'll identify the exact model and its age.

It should be one of these http://web.archive.org/web/20020404150605/http://www.evinrude.com/docktalk/modref/evmodyr/EHP20.html

Perhaps with a prefix letter and a suffix letter

Thanks - its number is 203B02A B42N and on that basis it dates from 1973. I imagine that despite its fairly good appearance inside and out that makes it pretty valueless but I'll try and get it onto the for sale page.

Whoops - just spotted that they charge £10 for 6 weeks advertising and wonder if the engine is worth that much. Looks like Ebay is the answer!

Interesting one because it's not listed on the American parts lists, presumably because it was made in Belgium for the European market. I guess though that is the same as the Johnson 20R73A which is listed and for which a very good range of parts is still available.

Known as the "Fastwin" BTW

Difficult to know if it will fetch a good price or not. You'd sell it easily in the USA but there seems little appetite for old outboards, even good ones, in the UK

I think the number indicates that it is a standard shaft model. Check on that and indicate in any ad if it's a standard or long shaft model.

A long shaft one one will measure somewhat over 25" from tansom top to anti-ventilation plate and be easily recognised by the 5" extension to the drive shaft housing shown inset in this diagram.

If anyone asks Oakley Marine , aka Outboards-direct in Brighton, and Wills Marine in Kingsbridge are good for spares

I had an old 1974 Johnson 40hp that we stopped using when it overheated due to the pipe connecting the water pump to the power head corroded. It then sat in the garage for quite a few years. I advertised it in Boats and Outboards as spares or repair and sold it easily. I think I put it in as best offer and got considerably more than expected. It was a few years ago and can't remember what we actually got for it.
