My merc has done the equivalent of to the moon and back how come marine engines pop their clogs with so little on the clock? (not literally to moon)

That is not such a bad idea and one I considered but as I had already put time and money into the boat I went for the new engine. If you are not going to lose too much money and can find a better boat for the price of a new engine then go for it.
There is not such a thing as a £3000 unit, .
I may have gone completely mad, but last night the prospect of re-engining became a bit too much.
The boat doesn't owe me much and life is short, so right now i'm seriously thinking of getting rid of her and buying another with a newish engine for 4-5K (the low end of replacing the engine). She needs new sails as well so that adds to the cost and......i'd really like to go sailing sometime soon!
I might wake up more positive tomorrow but we'll see.....
Getting a new engine is much more sensible than buying another boat with an engine already on it,unless you're as lucky as a friend of mine who bought a 31 foother ,with a brand new engine freshly installed, for less than the cost of the engine(the boat that is).
That looks good.Engine as good as new probably, good sails.Worth considering. How about similar size boat with 3 year old freshwater cooled engine, 3 year old sails, and general good condition for 3.5K?
Definitely tempted......
Right, just a little update as to where I am now with the engine issues......

Engine bay cleaned, painted (with huge thanks to a very generous Twister_Ken for his donation of bilge paint) and readied for the new Nanni 14hp waiting in the shed. It's a massive undertaking and one which I would never have started had I known what was in store. I need completely new sterngear including the stern tube itself and it gives me headaches whenever I think about alignment and nightmares when I think about the cost.
However, it's not going to defeat me. It make take another 9 months but next season we'll be finished and on the water.....fair winds and all that!!![]()

Ken will be wanting his paint back next spring so I'd leave the engine out.....
