Old electronics of any use?

As part of a new owner update I've just replaced an old Cobra MR55 radio with a newer model. Obviously it has an MMSI which will have to be removed for it to be of any use elsewhere. Given that problem is it of any value or should I just dump it?
I'm about to dump an old Raymarine multi function display which looks like it should make a useful monitor for something, but the electronics are beyond me. Has anyone else found a use for such items other than as doorstops?

Why not put it on Ebay? I have sold a lot of old stuff on Ebay, sometimes for pretty decent prices. Also bought some old stuff to stay compatible with what we had at the time.

MMSI can be reprogrammed for most. Google is your friend.

A timely nudge for me, thanks.
At a car boot sale last autumn I sold (gave away almost) the Icom VHF which came with the boat when I bought her in 2010. I installed a new one in 2015.
At the carboot sale the guy who bought it said he would use it for his fishing boat.

Who should (should have) reprogramme/d it - him or me?
I don't fancy the maritime plod turning up and accusing me of inappropriate/illegal use

Early Colour Raymarine displays are sought after on Ebay, ie RL 70 CRC and its bigger brother the RL 80 CRC .Prices between £200- £350 are not unusual.
Later more moderrn stuff will fetch more.
Ensure you have all the power leads to get the best price.
Old analogue radar leads have been sold for over £150.00 alone if complete with correct plugs and not cut or messed with.

I too have been surprised what older kit fetches on Ebay. I've also sold faulty stuff including a C70 plotter describing as carefully and accurately as I could what was wrong, and listing as "for spares or repair".

Part of non compatable upgrades.
You may have a perfectly adequate (and simple to operate ) integrated system on your boat which reliably functions well for your needs.
However should you wish/need to upgrade one particular item be it display or scanner because it is not functioning correctly or simply failed, you will be faced with a choice of replacing the entire system from scratch ( all that rewiring anyone) or buying and installing an independant stand alone system.
Just how many screens do you need on your dashboard.?

Do not think for one moment your new ultra modern system costing thousands will work out of the box either.
Boat moored behind me, had a complete new Raymarine navigation system installed by a very reputable RM outfit.
Took 18 months to get it working correctly.
Hence the demand for used kit.

My boat didnt have any nav kit ,just the one vhf radio. I had the mfd fitted in 2014 . But I have since installed AIS and a new DSC vhf and associated new antennas myself.
The hardest part has been routing the cables.
Everything works with no issues.

Owner of boat wanted to update his ancient RL80 gear, wanted something newer.
Asked Raymarine to provide and install entire system, new everything.
The problems started when the supplier/installer provided wrong depth sounder and then installed it in the wrong location.Then months of delay getting the autopilot to work .....it then got really complicated
Raymarine at Southhampton then got involved .All sorted now.

Sounds more like faulty or inappropriate installation rather than faulty equipment. Not sure how buying used kit helps with that.
