We are one of the few labs

that test for it .......

It is relatively new factor in the market - before no-one really bothered, but now its regularly asked for. The exact nature I am unsure of at moment as I am not the chemist, but I can check.

Note that I did say that this was another avenue - meaning that I didn't want to start a Chemical review !!!!

Anyway no prob .......

Re: OK .. will do nm

Some months ago I posted a panicky message saying my diesel had turned green and viscous. I noticed it when topping up from a plastic gallon container of Esso diesel. I then took three clean jam jars and drained some off from the injector, some off from before the filter (bottom of the tank) and I put the dregs of the Esso in the third one. Guess what? The brand new Esso was noticeably greener in coulour than either of the other two (which just looked like typical "straw" coloures diesel). The esso also seemed (just sloshing it around) to be a tiny bit more viscous but it's obviously supposed to be like that and the boat engine runs OK so I guess all's well that end well!

Maybe Esso jouned the Green Party ????

NO idea - as most Gasoil is blue-green poaque unless specific dye markers are put in - such as the Red for boat / agri use.

Occasionally you may see a darker brown type gasoil - but this is Marine Gasoil - commonly termed MDO - and a lower grade that is not really suitable for yachts.

It used to be that various companies tried to convince public that their product was really different from another co's ..... by adding dyes etc. But most of that rubbish is left behind in history now.

Re: Maybe Esso jouned the Green Party ????

Thanks Nigel.

I was a bit confused at first but, as I said, it seems to run OK so I'm happy. The Esso concerned just came from my local filling station. As I only use about a gallon a season I never bother filling up at the fuel pontoon so it was just the first garage I came to. By the way, is there any truth in the rumour that ordinary garages sell different grades of the stuff in summer and winter? Presumably the winter stuff has more volatile agents in it to prevent it freezing?

To postee - SATURN

Sorry - but my post got mixed up in the thread ...... now I understand why you pm'd me !!!!

It was directed NOT at you but at some generally who are quoting various aspects of fuels and additives etc. in various posts that have been made over years on this and other forums.

I hereby apologize to SATURN publicly as it was not intended at him.........
