Old Compass info

Just re-discovered this old compass whilst looking for something else.

I got it from a friend in Germany many years ago but as he has traveled the globe it could be from anywhere.
It has numbers on the bottom 1823 but no idea if this is the year or just a number.

Anyone any idea where it came from or time period? the only thing I know is its not some form of modern copy and it is old, it has a makers mark below N that I cant make out.

any ideas?
 
I thought the makers name began with Sch but looking at a couple on E bay it looks like it is a Sestrel that would have been in a box, I shall polish it up and put it on the mantle piece now the kids are hopefully old enough not to break it.

Probably not that old either as mine circa 1940 uses compass points rather than 360 degree bearings
