Old codgers?

Remarked to my wife over soup and brown bread a few minutes ago that Scuttlebutters were fulminating over the BBC's talking about a shipwreck in the English Channel when it should have said Dover Strait. "Hmph!" she sniffed in the tone of one who has already written and posted her Christmas cards, "they sound like a bunch of real old codgers."

What could I say?

Yes, my one often sort of sniffs and says condescendingly "Are you talking to your little friends again?"

Then as she walks away mutters something about sad buggers!
