To add to the debate on old 2-stroke fuel. I've just started my leaf blower which hasn't been run since March.
I didn't put any new fuel in and it went 3rd pull.

Do I get a prize or anything?

Last week I used my 2 stroke lawn mower for the first time for about 3years. All the petrol in the tank had evaporated leaving just the oil so I flushed that out and put in new fuel (fresh early this year I think) Then it started at the 2nd turn of the handle, yes a proper starting handle, no bits of string when that was built. By appointment to HM the King according to the decal. (98cc Villiers engine as used on small motor bikes of that era with lots of bits the same as Seagull outboards)

3 Years since you mowed the Lawn!
See any Jap snipers?

Had a "Bown" 98cc autocycle (moped nowadays) with a Villiers mill.
2 speed as well!
1951 Vintage twas my first form of motorised transport.
Flat out at 40mph made enough smoke and noise to scare away any Jap snipers in the area!
In those days with the two stroke oil available it was 25 to one mix!
Removal of filler cap, upturn stick the oil in it and dump it in the tank.
Shake it all about and off you go.
Things seemed a bit more free and easy in the 60,s, no helmet, no tax disc half the time!,a spare plug and abit of "emery" to clean the points!
Getting all nostalgic now!
"The good Old Days"?
Or rose tinted glasses? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Aerokart Series Class 1 - Go-kart

Villiers 9E3 engine ...... (the 3 on the end of model number indicates 3 speed gearbox).

Had that when I was 13 yrs old ..... sold it when 17 ...... had some hair-raising moments in Karting with it !!!!

Re: Aerokart Series Class 1 - Go-kart

That,l a been a 197cc with an outside flywheel.
Christ sounding like a right anorak /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Be showing stationary engines in Ag shows next!
Apologise to all that show engines that don,t go anywhere!
I,m off /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bronze flywheel, covered by a light ally case?

Pulled one out of a skip and stuck it into a James Captain frame...... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Aerokart Series Class 1 - Go-kart

That,s the one!
They didn,t go "bbrring de ding ding Bring bring bring de ding ding ding like the slant eyed ones.
More like "Pop pop pop splutter poppopopopop dong dong de dong smokey smokey spluuuter splodge cough conk", particurlarly in the wet.
Sorry to describe the particular characteristic sounds of the different era,s of engines, in such a detailed and technical manner. My highly tuned brain and in depth engineering background, does not permit me to rhetort in more simple terms.
James Captains/Franny Barnets tears welling up now. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
See you,ve got me at it again
I,m definateley off! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

210cc rebored oversize ... and no outside flywheel

It was basically straight out motorbike engine ..... with even kickstart provision - but kickstart handle taken off to comply with push-start rule. (Bit daft really seeing as she had full clutch and gearbox ! and I had a start penalty ...)
Fitted with Amal carb, cherry straight through tuned exhaust ....

She had a weird HT arangement ..... to bolster the spark she had s second condensor jubilee clipped to the frame in parellel to the one internal .... tried disconnecting it and spark was weak as hell ... reconnected and spark was good. Even tried replacing coil and internal condensor etc. - nope - it needed that external extra. But it used to eat spark plugs ... even the hotter ones that had 3 body electrodes surrounding the centre one ...

The engine I believe is the same one that was fitted to the old Bond 3 wheelers ..... and mounted on the front wheel.

I've been running my lawn mower on the remains of last years 2 stroke fuel all summer.

It's a bit smoky (it is a 4 stroke lawn mower) but seems like a reasonable way of getting rid of the old fuel.

Ahh a man after my own heart /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

When it comes to questions on this forum about aged fuel of any description I feel that members fall into a number of groups.

1. Never mind the age - just turn the key or pull the cord and see what happens.

2. What ever you do change or add new fuel every 10+ days. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

3. Those that say they operate 2 above but actually operate in 1 above.

I could bang on about the amount of times I've started engines with v.old fuel in but it has been my experience that if an engine doesn't start it's not because of the age of the fuel but a mechanical/electrical problem - but definitely not aged fuel.

Sure if you can add new fuel then do so, give it a shake up before you try to start it, but my first port of call has always been "turn the key or pull the cord" first!

Peter.

WOW ... I\'d say that ...

When you are at over 100mph and arse is only an inch of the deck .... adrenalin rush is an understatement ...

Forget the fairground stuff ..........
