OK I\'ve now decided to by an ICOM VHF but.....

.....What is the differance between the new MC31 and the more expensive units in the range.

All I really need is a back up VHF and something to use on flybridge without it drowning in rain and spray like my late Silva.

Am I still getting the quality and waterproofness that I will neeed in the cheaper model?

Why not buy the cheapest available and put it in a waterproof bag? After all apart from calling marinas/nearby boats how often will it get used? If it's anything like mine almost never, but then I don't have an upstairs! /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

We tend to use the handheld a fair bit and it doubles as a flybridge monitor but for me the waterproofness is most important feature and sadly my late model did not score well on that ;-).

I dont suppose a company as good as Icom are gonna have any in their range that are not waterproof, ask the dealer, should say on the spec on the package yes?

The 31 will do everything you want and it is fully waterproof. Why not get a proper VHF for the Flybridge?

I just don't feel I really need a two station job on flybridge and can't justify extra cost and to an extent weight etc.

Why not try the better spec'd M21 at the M31 price from these guy's I phoned and got the deal wich is not on the qweb.

If you can get the M21 at M31 money then buy it. They are both as waterfroof as each other, I think, but the M21 is more compact and has a few extra features. Mind you I don't know if it can also use AA batteries as a standby like the M31.

Actually courtesy of my lovely wife I am now the proud owner of a MC21 from Marine Superstore at the price of the MC31. This must be the best deal around at present.
