Oilly Exhaust

Ran the engine up yesterday on the mooring, exhaust water fine. then moved boat to pontoon about half a mile or so - On the way there exhaust was pumping out oilly water and did'nt seem to have usual grunt. Once on the pontoon left the engine running for good half hour or so and no oilly water from exhaust. No overheating etc. Anyone any idea's - Its a Thorneycroft by the way! Thx

My Perkins 4.236 from -77, with more than 3000 hours on the clock leaves small traces of oil on the water from the exhaust immediately after starting from cold. Somebody told me it´s unburnt fuel from the less than satisfying combustion when the engine is cold and nothing to worry about.

Our Thornycroft 90 did the same when cold, but not always. Black oily type reidue that quickly disapereared. Told it was something to do with putting engine under load before it had warmed up.

<font color=blue>We recently had this subject discussed in the motor boats forum. In essence the answer is, if its just a light film don't worry, its just un burnt fuel and quite normal.

Well it looked like loads to me but as l say it cleared up after a while - ran the engine upto full revolutions on the pontoon in gear fwd & reverse and none seemed to come out. Hopefully its as you seem to agree its just unburnt fuel blowing its way out Thx for your comments. Phil
