I need new oilies and my choice lies between Henri LLoyd Ocean and Musto HPX. I would be grateful for comments from anyone with experience of these.

See "cold weather sailing togs" Thread on scuttlebutt,

As I mentioned there I am using the Musto HPX and they are great but do go the whole hog and use the tree layer system.

I also have an old set of Henri Lloyd which have been over the years very good, but they are a bit long in tooth which means they aren't breathable and are heavy still do the job though.

If you look at the profesionals who aren't given free gear most go for the Musto option.

I had a Musto MPX jacket whose lining started to degrade catastrophically after 3 seasons. Given the price of this stuff I am NOT impressed. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Unfortunatley I had not retained the receipt so I have had no redress. Contacted Musto, but they were not overly helpful.

The problem with HL is that everyone else is going to look at you in a certain way.

That said, I love my HL seaboots very much.

It may depend upon what your shape is. Some people find the neck closure of one make more comfortable than another, or the sleeves easier to put on, or the pockets better placed and so on. It may be best to try them on before deciding.

No experience of current products, but I have a lot of respect for Henri Lloyd gear. My wife & I have Henri Lloyd oilies which date back further than I'd dare admit on a forum! They're still dry and cosy - although sadly not breathable.

In all probability you will be happy with either. I've worn both and found them both to be warm and comfortable.

Put them both on and take a little time seeing how they feel and how the pocket access etc works for you.

Why?

The wife and I both bought Gill - mainly after getting in and out of all of them at the boat show(and getting overheated!) - they were the only ones that fitted comfortably. Pleased with them.

Short version:
Torn sleeve on Musto Offshore jacket during a cross channel hop. Monday am telephoned Musto who instructed me to send it to them, no promises until they saw it. Offered to courier to me a loan jacket for a forthcoming trip.

End result, new sleeve in jacket, a few extra bits and pieces included, three day turn around. No charge and a short note apologising that this had happened.

Excellent service, great company excellent equipment.

I bought some Musto trousers a year ago, I sent them back after they wore out at the pocket. As I did not have the reciept they weren't interested. They said they were manufactured two years ago. I asked, how I was supposed to know how long a shop has held their stock and that I would have expected the trousers to last more than two years anyway.
I didn't even recieve a reply.
Who keeps reciepts for clothing anyway? My wife throws her reciepts away before she gets home or maybe she hides them /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All very interesting.

I am consdiering the Gill Atlantic or Musto Offshore. Musto HPX and MPX and Gill OC Racer seem a bit OTT for UK Coastal work or am i missing something ?

Also do any of these jackets have built in safety harnesses any more ?

[/ QUOTE ]I had a Musto coastal that did the same after 3 years, though it may not have helped that I wore it pretty much every day. I did have the receipt - Musto didn't quibble and sent a new one immediately.

SWMBO bought herself the Musto HPX suit when it first came out. Cost a bomb but it was the only heavy-duty one to fit an, err, fuller-figured lady. It's worked impeccably, even I have to admit its been good value for money. I'd recommend it even for coastal sailing if you are a regular winter sailor.

I'm interested in the heavyweights because I sail on the west coast of Scotland where it do rain a bit, and my view is that an inshore downpour is just as wet as one in the middle of the Atlantic.

Another Gill vote (Key West) as they were the best fit for the fuller male figure when I was buying 18 months ago. No complaints since and still very comfortable.

Loads of satisfied customers here - take your choice.

Let me enter a word (?forlorn) from the wings. I am fed up waddling about with cardboard stiff oilies from the big houses. The cost, the weight, the loss of flexibility (especially when wet) and the rest...when you're objective about it, that is!

I went to a mountaineer shop - a good one - and bought gear suited to high mountain climbing. Now these folks know how to keep you warm, dry and with sufficient flexibility in the arms etc to actually hold on to crags etc.

But if your bar won't serve you in anything other than Ellen's latest gear.....

Local bar is more of a geriatric blue blazer type of place - oilies are frowned upon (unless the whole crew wear matching ones - and in this seasons colours too).
I take my thirst/money elsewhere.
