Oil temp

I have noticed that the oil temperature gets very warm on the port engine, The oil pressure has always been a little lower than the starboard (and still is) but when I get to about 18-20 knots the oil temperture starts to rise very rapidly.
Could I need a new oil pump?
I dropped a valve at the end of last year so wonder if some c##p has damaged the pump?
Could it be the heat exchanger? The water temp goes up a little but not as dramatically.

It may be that your engine oil heat exchanger is partially blocked, either on the oil or water side, more likely the water side, you need to check the flow through it. Often twin engines show lower oil pressure on one than the other, if it's always been that way, I wouldn't worry, if your oil temp rises quite a lot, the oil pressure will fall, as the oil thins. I think it's a cooling problem rather than oil pump, if the oil pressure is within specs, it's likely the oil pump is fine. IMHO

Hi chris, it's possible that the oil pressure release valve has been jammed, this will allow oil to be bypassed to the important areas (bearings, turbo etc) thereby bypassing the filter and cooler. you should be getting a high oil pressure reading at some point, you need to look in the book and find out what pressure the PLV is set at. if the guage reads higher than this, start looking there.

the other possibility is that the oil cooler is not working correctly (has it got a thermostat?) or could the coolant side be silted up?

if everything else seems to be in order, check the guage (swap with the s'bd one)

hope this helps, regards, steve.

As others have said it sounds like either the oil cooler itself or possibly the heat exchanger is partially choked. The heat exchanger and oil cooler (and turbo intercooler, which I think it has) sit one after the other on the raw water pump circuit, so a slight blockage on one affects the other.
Looks like you need to remove both and get them cleaned out by your local radiator man. Recent ones have been about £ 50 (Cash gov' ) plus the seals etc.
Couple of other point, I assume that the raw water pump is in good nick and that it doesn't use fresh water at all.

I knew the previous owners of this boat, and until the last couple of years it was based on the non-tidal Thames, and largely used as a live aboard.

On e of the problems on the non tidal Thames is lack of water and plenty of silt.
I would certainly check the oil cooler for blockages.

These BMW engines later became the Mercruiser, who put on additional oil cooling. Exactly what I can't say. I believe there was a kit available to update the BMW spec' to Mercruiser. There is a very knowledgeable chap at Val Wyatt Marina, Wargrave. They have a website, something like ValWattMarine.co.uk.
If they can not help, let me know, as there is one other person I know familiar with these engines.

Thanks for the replies, I suspected the heat exchanger but wanted to hear what you guys thought.

Small world!!! Yes it was on the Thames and then moved to island harbour on the wight. When I picked her up the raw water filters were very blocked (including a blue plaster!!!)

I think I'll take it to the rad man and get it cleaned.

Had the same probs with the V%&^os on mine, being an ex Thames boat.
When we split Clive Neighbours Perkins cooler stack their were intact seagull feathers in between the oil cooler stacks and the intercooler, they'd travelled right the way through the system and lodged there!
