I cut the elastic wings off so they sit flat first.I keep a pack of babies nappies in my toolkit. They are good at absorbing all kinds of crap.
I also purchased a pack of oil absorbant mats or pads from screwfix. Not overly expensive. I found that 1 sheet cut in half fits conveniently under the engine in my boat & soaks up most oil drips. I have a short length of waste pipe & have rolled 3-4 pieces up & slid them in the pipe. they sit in the engine bay ready for when required.
Car Plan do an engine de greaser in spray & liquid form. One could Mopup some excess with the liquid & nappies. Then spray around the spray & wipe the excess with a nappy on a stick.
Gunk might help with the initial clean, but may make just make more mess. Can be washed off with water I seem to recall, so may work.
