I have a Volvo 2003T and would like to know if rimula x 20/50 oil would be ok to use I normally use volvo 10/40. I'm a bit paranoid about the engine due to the turbo what do you reckon thanks in advance. Ian.
 
The correct spec for the oil type is 15/40 w engine oil I wouldn't use the 20/50 as described but another 15/40w diesel engine oil should be fine doesn't have to be Volvo as the warranty on the engine is no longer current....

Yes your right I do normally put in 15/40 its just that the boat is in a small fishing village in Greece and all i could find locally was 20/50. I will try harder and find a good quality 15/40.

There was a good post earlier this month regarding the importance of the API classification which may be more important than the viscosity. As I recall, for older engines API numbers CF-41 and CD and CH4 , are Ok but CG,CI and CF-4 should only be used in modernengines when specifically recommended.
I hope I got that right.
It would be appreciated if there was a re-listing of the recommendations from our expert.

Just to add that, for those of us with the older 'agricultural' diesel engines (Perkins for example) the use of modern oils with detergents is not recomended. The reason being that the coarser old engines need a bit of 'crud' to help the sealing between piston and ring.
 
Thanks to Google I found the earlier posting I was looking for by vyv_cox on 15/01/2008 from which I copy as follows:
"The manual recommends an oil to specification API CD. This has been obsolete for more than 10 years but you can still buy oil to this spec from many car parts shops. It tends to be produced by less well known manufacturers, but I have not found this to cause problems. Alternatively, Yanmar's oil is still to API CD but I don't know the manufacturer. Oil to API CD by major manufacturers is still sold in French supermarkets.

API CD has been superseded by API CF-4. Oil to this spec is made by all majors. Don't use an oil to a higher spec, e.g. API CG or more. It may lead to bore wear problems."
