My boat has an Italian Lombardini engine, which specifies "Agip Sigma HD Series 3 MIL-L-2104-C API CD" oil for the engine and SAE20-30 for the transmission.

Since you can't readily get Agip oil in this country and none of the labels on oil in Halfords has anything remotely resembling those hieroglyphics, does anyone know what is likely to be safe to put in the engine?

Oddly, it also reckons that I need 1.5Kg of oil. Presumably that's about 1.5 litres?

API CD is a very normal category. It's the diesel specific standard, so luck for Diesel specific oils. Normal auto oils will be SG/SH/SJ, and many are joint (say) SG/CC

No! I wouldn't use multigrade in the transmission.

There should be some SAE 20-30 oil in any reasonable motor factors. I'm surprised Hellfrauds didn't have any though.

I've just gone through the handbook again and there should be a label on the transmission housing saying what kind of oil it requires. The current stuff is noticably pink, which means it's probably ATF.

Thanks for the advice, chaps. Much appreciated.

I have read somewhere that the CD rating is now obsolete and that CF-4 can be used as a replacement. I've not been able to find CD rated oils anywhere.

Please note I am not an expert! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Silly me. I should have looked at your link first.

I made the mistake of changing the oil in my gearbox like with like, on the sugestion of the yard who had serviced it before I had the boat. I finished up putting SAE 80 gear oil in when it should have been Auto Transmission oil. The result was the friction plates burned out. The moral is don't change like for like, check with the manufacturer and follow their instructions.

I run a Land rover that a previous owner put SAE 80 in the box, when it needs ATF. Fortunately I changed it in time... The gearbox was unrecognisable with ATF! Smoth, slick changes

I decided to wait until I'd looked at the engine and transmission before I bought the oil. Despite the handbook saying SAE 20/30, there's a big, red sticker on the transmission housing saying "ATF Only", so checking with the manufacturer doesn't necessarily work when your engine is Italian!

Holy thread resurrection Batman!

I've just been googling the exact same spec of oil and came across this thread. I didnt have a full handbook last time I changed the oil and I've been using a 15W/40 enhanced mineral diesel oil.

The above spec from Lombardini seems to be some obscure extreme high spec military grade stuff (I kid you not), does it really need this for what is essentially a n/a 16hp 600cc cement mixer engine?

What should I use? This thread is very old so I guess specs might have changed again...

Thanks
