Oil Prices

I filled the boat up last week at 1.66 a litre (petrol) in a gamble that in the short term the prices are only going to go up - more bandwagon than anything else I fear though.

I'm considering bringing my own throughout the season to keep it topped up - against the rules maybe but their pricing model is disgusting profiteering and they have 100% monopoly.

Heating oil is also a good debate - we have a 1200 litre tank and filled up in October for around 50ppl - its now considerably more and some places nearly double. I had £100 of logs dropped off for the burner in September and still got 3-4 weekends worth left. I'll be ordering twice as much next year and start to use wood as a source of heat to preserve the oil!

A more economical marina would be more effective. Fuel is maybe 30pct of my overall bill.

Quite so, if I moved the boat from Hayling to Brighton I'd save enough to pay for the entire season's fuel, even factoring in extra miles to get to the Solent.

More info re heating oil prices.

I phoned a couple of oil suppliers. Present price up here varies from 59p/l to 64p/l, so worth shopping around.

One I spoke to was very helpful. He gave me a bit of history this winter. It was 40p/l in November, but when the cold snap hit in December it went up to 69p/l and there was a 5 week delay to get a tank filled.

Now it's getting warmer, the price is falling, and he thinks the recent "blip" due to the issues in Lybia is just people scared and panic buying.

His advice was wait if you can and prices will come down again. So that's what I will do, I have at least a months oil, more if we use it sparingly and burn more wood instead.
