had an electronic oil pressure guage fitted over the winter. Its a VDO unit with a supposedly compatible sender (Perkins)
When the ignition is switched on the needle goes right across to full pressure (100 I think)
When the engine is started the needle drops back down to zero and refuses to budge.
Normal runing pressure off the old mechanical dial used to read around 60 when cold dropping to 50 when warm.
Assuming that there is nothing wrong with the actual engine - any clues as to why the new gauge wont work?

yep, wrong sender unit.

the one you have isn't for a guage, it's just a oil pressure swith for a lamp... and it appears to be working correctly contact made when no pressure, off when running.

what you need is a sender for a guage, unless it's wired incorrectly, but i'd go for the sender.

hope this helps a bit. regards, steve.
