When I check the oil level on my Yanmar 2YM the dipstick always comes out totally clean when I first take it out. On reinserting the dipstick and then looking again it shows oil up to the correct level. I have so far run this engine for 40 hours (total engine hours only 300) and checked the oil at least 20 times. I have not had to add any oil since the last service. I should add that the oil checks have all been done with a cold engine.
I have never seen this before on any car or boat engine I’ve had. Can anyone explain?

My 1600 hour Volvo TAMD61A's also do exactly the same. I well remember the bolt of terror that gripped me the first time I checked the dipstick...

Apparently a lot of modern cars also do the same, according to a club member I was chatting to about it recently.

Never seen it, or at least noticed it anywhere before...but funnily enough the old man’s TAMD61’s do this too. How do you find them ? Been great engines in his princess so far at least. Relentless power in them. Would hate to imagine should they go wrong though !
