The oil leak seems to be coming down the fly wheel case and the drip starts at the back of the engine and is about half way up its width (side to side)
Theres about a couple of table spoons of oil after a 3-4 hour run
The breather is blowing a bit of oil on to the air filter but it doesnt seem enough for the amount im cleaning up
Any body got any Ideas
Thanks

Is it a volvo? I bought a brand new boat in 1990 and had same prob. thought the crancase seal had gone, I finished up laying at side of engine, while running, and found it was coming out of one of volvo,s patent "push on pipe connections" on installation they hadnt got the "O" ring on square.Could it be this?

Is the crankshaft seal replaceable without taking out the crankshaft? If it is, then it's not the end of the world, it's a [--word removed--] of a job but can be done in place if there's room to get the gearbox off. No more than a days work.

Hope it isn,t but if there is oil in the bell housing it can mean the crank seal is weeping. Usually the result of worn crank, duff seal, or over filling. Had the same problem last year on my Volvo TAMD 30. My problem was the seal had actually worn a groove in the crank, yes it can happen! However all was not lost. Had a tool made initially to reposition the seal to sit on the crank in a different unworn part . Not being satisfied with that I discovered something made in the States called "Speedi Sleeve" An interfierence fit steel sleeve which is tapped onto the crank, so far so good (touches wood whilst fingers crossed!) The Volvo was 21 Years old you shouldn,t have that problem really, so if it,s just the seal Don,t Despair good luck! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Any blocked breather or deep breathing (worn rings or valve guides/seals) can cause a crankshaft seal to weep as they are not designed to resist pressure but to just wipe the journal and return oil to the crankcase. It could be a symptom of something else. Or it could be at fault itself. But it would be a bugger to replace the seal if that's not the problem.
