We bought two oil lamps for Allegro this winter, which look so much nicer than the electric lights. They were the "Fastnet" type, which seem quite widely available from UK chandlers.

When they arrived there were a few features about the design which made me just wonder if they'd been made by someone who'd never actually used an oil lamp (tricky to fill, poor fit of the glass chimney onto the body), but my greatest disappointment came when after a few hours burning the glass chimney on first one and then the other cracked, apparently simply from the heat. Anyone else had this problem? Anyone know a source of better quality replacement chimneys than originally supplied? It does seem a bit much to supply an oil lamp with non-heatproof glass...

Cheers
Patrick

The best source for different oil lamps and spares that I know is <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.classicmarine.co.uk/asp/product.asp?product=248&cat=71&ph=cat&keywords=&recor=&SearchFor=&PT_ID=>Classic Marine </A> - Give them a try.

Take the glass back and request refund. Nauticalia told me that they had had problems with air bubbles in a batch of glasses and had switched suppliers.

They should swap them. If they don't say something abount fit for purpose/not of merchantable quality etc etc.

cheers,

Nick
