Reading the threads on Oil Absorbent Pads and cleaning of bilge under the engine. I fitted a removable drip tray under mu engine to try to stop any oil drips going in to the bilge so as to try to reduce sea pollution as much as possible. Oil Absorbent Pads are great to separate oil and water but having a drip tray would eliminate that need.

How many boats on here have drip trays and were they fitted from new, fitted by current owner or previous owner.

Mine is a plastic cat litter tray from a 'Pound Shop'

Whatever fits between the bearers.
Plant propagator trays are worth a look for some boats.

It's worth having a tray even if it stays clean between oil changes.

Bought a drip tray last week (6 litre rectangle i think) but it was too big and I couldnt get it under the engine. May buy a 2litre motorbike one and see if that fits.

Which size did you go for? I can see how both maybe a good idea? tray ontop of pads, because that way the pads will absorb any condensation or other drips that the tray doesnt catch. Doesnt do any harm anyway.

Mine has a drip tray built in from new. However, my engine does not drip, and if it did I would repair it. I can't be doing with that.

My drip tray is custom made from galvanized steel and the only water I tend to get in my bilge is from when I work on my water system. Mostly I have wood saw and sanding dust from the fitting out. No leaks from outside at I have a steel boat with fully welded deck with very few holes right through hull and deck.

I have been chasing a engine oil leek but this was going into the drip tray and was easy to clean up with kitchen paper (with SWMBO's permission).

I cannot get a drip tray out from under my engine so have used 3M's pro oil absorbent roll - talk about an oil magnet, they are amazing. Great for getting oil and grease off skin as well when there are no washing facilities.

Good for you, but one day you might have to bleed the fuel system in a hurry...

Oh there are occasional drips when I do maintenance, and an ill-timed wave while topping up with oil creates an effect of which Exxon would be proud. For those the drip tray is very handy. It's regular drips in service I can't abide. Engines shouldn't do that.

Kindred Spirit had the bilge section below the engine partitioned off with plywood from the main bilge.

Ariam doesn't have a tray as such, but the saildrive base moulding encloses a section of the hull below the sump. It wouldn't catch drips from everywhere, but it does fortunately catch the small leak we've been unable to track down and fix.

I moulded a fibreglass splashback and drip tray for the fuel filters, so nothing gets in the bilge from working on those.

Yes, I suppose so. Might attract other dogs though! And I'm pretty sure they cost more

150 sheets, 60x45cm for £16.88 isn't bad? Not sure how many litres they will hold though.

There is a nice coppercoated boat called Kindred Spirit at chichester. Is that the same one? Looks nice if it is.

Probably not. Our Kindred Spirit was sold to a gentleman who moved her down to Restronguet and then Mylor, in Cornwall. She's a Cornish Yawl, a 24' fibreglass gaffer.
