What oil should I use to top up ?
manual says transmission fluid but engine oil if under 3000 rpm
Engine is cummins 4BT (max rev 2800 rpm)

looking at fluid on dipstick it doesn't look like transmission fluid (which if I remember is a red fluid) so I tend to think engine oil but I just don't know !!!!

can anyone please help me ???

transmission fluid velvet drive

Its ok to use 'ATF' automatic transmission fluid (red). I have used it on 2 boats 16 yrs with no problems. It can be bought at any motor accesory shop.

The manual I'm reading says ATF but that a SAE 30 engine oil may be used if the speed does not exceed 3000rpm. Multigrade oils are not acceptable.

So in your case you have a choice. ATF or a single grade SAE30 engine oil.

ATF?

Do think the engine has ever exceeded 3,000 revs? if not then the former owner may have used sae30, but if it looks black the possibility is that it is burned ATF. changing it sounds like a good idea.

yes I realise you guys are right about changing oil - Is it alright to extract the old oil from the dipstick using my Pella ?? The manual talks about purging air ???

No problems with using the Pella oil extractor.

Dont use oil unless you have problems with gears slipping, having said that you wont cause any damage if you do use 30wt.

Tom

PS I am away at the moment but if you want a manual for these gearboxes drop me a pm and when I get back (next week) I'll send you one via pdf.

it's just as easy to remove the lowest cooler pipe, and behind that you will find a strainer, clean this as well.

That's what we use, our Fords only rev to 2450,

All the big Princesses use 30W engine oil in their hydraulic boxes, where as the smaller boats with higher revving engines use ATF inthe ZF gearboxes.
So your engine rpm should be your guide. The purging of air simply means after refilling run the engine and select forward and reverse several times to make sure the hydraulics are primed, then switch off and check the oil level straight away, it may need a few run thro's to get the level up to where it should be. They usually read higher after they have been stopped for a while, the important thing is that the oil level is correct when running so there is enough for lubrication, cooling and operating the hydraulic clutches.
