Hi All,

My boat has an oil lubricated PPS type stern gland seal fed from a resevoir (small bottle of oil in the cockpit locker). Does anyone know what sort of oil I should use. The only advice I've had so far is not to use hydraulic oil, so I'm guessing it is important to use the right oil.

Thanks,

Mark.

It's probably a Halyard Marine oil seal, and uses any good quality engine oil. Check the oil level frequently in the reservoir....it should use almost nothing...if you are having to top up frequently then there is a leak and the gland should be checked.
One thing to be wary of is if you are running the engine on a particularly cold day..if the oil has thickened to a paste. I would try and warm the engine compartment so it become viscous again before putting it into gear.

There have been other types that have popped up on the forum which are similar to the halyard seal but which aren't and don't use engine oil.

The halyard type has 2 pipes - one in the top of the bottle and the other in the bottom. Seem to remember the other oil/bottle/seal had only one, but I forget what oil it took.

Topped my Halyard seal up recently, used some two-stroke oil, think it doesnt matter much. About half-full after nearly 10 years. Hope it will remain one of the things I can take for granted. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
