My handbook states "SAE 20 HD-OIL service cc" but they do some stuff in Wilkinsons that just says 20-40 suitable for cars & lawn mowers in about a 3 litre container for about 9 quid,anybody know if that is any good?
Oil for BUKH DV10 Diesel Engine.

15/40 CF / CF4 is the current lowest spec diesel oil commonly available . you can obtain "straight" oils if you look

I have a Bukh DV36 and the Bukh guys in Poole recommend 15w/40 mineral oil for the engine. Cheap enough in the supermarkets and Halfords.

The stuff in Wilkinsons just states mineral oil 20-40 not CF or anything like that & they seem to have separate flashier oils that state for diesels.
The tip about super markets is a good one & I don't know why I did'nt think of that.Thanks for that I will check it out.

Check the website.
I think you will find that the oils in Wilkinsons labelled as diesel motor oil are all to API CF or CF-4 spec
The "C" in an API spec indicates its for a compression ignition engine ie diesel
An "S" in the API spec indicates in is suitable for spark ignition engines ie petrol
Many oils are sold as suitable for either
Important that you select the correct viscosity rating of course
They have mineral 15W40 £12 for 5litres, semi-synthetic 5W30 at £23 and fully synthetic 5W40 at £30. All are to API CF / CF4 spec
If we had a Wilkinsons nearby I'd be off for 5 litres of the mineral 15W40 for my old car but I suppose I will have to pay a little more for similar from Halfords

Tesco do (or used to do) a basic mineral 10W/40 CC/CD specifically labelled as 'for older diesel cars'. Have only seen it in the large EXTRA stores though.
If you particularly want a traditional straight 20 or 30 oil then MORRIS LUBRICANTS offer a huge range. They do mail order, but you can usually source rather cheaper on EBAY.

Hi. I have always used the TESCO mineral oil for diesel engines in my BUKH DV10. It seems to do the job - I change it every year, plus filter.

I've got a Bukh 20 which also specifes grade CC HD 20 oil. I use Carlube HD30 diesel engine oil, readily obtainable from the independent High St motor factor shops around here for about £15-£20 for 4.5L.

I checked out Wilkinsons again yesterday & the stuff I mentioned is actually 20W-40 & is £9 something for 4.5 litres.So even cheaper than the website Vic.
So what does "service cc" mean which is what is specifically specified in my owners handbook?
I shall visit the local Tesco's later but I suspect it is to small to stock it

'Service CC' almost certainly means API CC. This is a very old grade but still widely used in canal boats, taxis, farm equipment, etc. Explanations on my website under Engine>what oil. Morris Lubricants still make it but I doubt you can buy it in any normal outlet, except agricultural. The nearest you will find is API CF-4 as even API CD is virtually unobtainable in UK now.

CC is the service category for diesel engines originally introduced in 1961 but now obsolete.

Bleedin hell this is complicated.I checked out Tesco's & their stuff referred to earlier is 8 quid for just two litres.I shall check out ASDA because there is a bigger branch near me but I suspect I shall settle for bog standard low tech diesel stuff for cars because my patience is running out.

15w/40 mineral oil is on offer at Halfords at the moment for £10 for 5 litres. It is happily lubricating my Bukh engine for this season.

Certain synthetic and semi-synthetic oils (for petrol engines ???) are on offer at £10 for 4 litres.
Oil 15W40 mineral diesel engine oil is on todays shopping list but I am expecting to pay £15.19 for 5litres

Oh well, that makes it £2.69 more. I guess those of us with ancient boat engines / cars just have to put up with it
Was in Wilkinsons (Havant) yesterday and their mineral diesel 15W/40 was actually £13.64 /5l.
(I still have a good stock of 15W/40 SJ/CF for the car from several years back when it was £8.99 /5l at LIDL

According to my manual (DV36) the same quality of Lub oil can be used in my engine and gear box as long as the viscosity is pure and in no circumstances can a mixed viscosity be used in the gear. Anyone know any more ?

I asked the guys at Bukh UK down in Poole about the oil for the DV36. Their reply is below:-
Good morning,
It is perfectly OK to use road diesel.
The oil required is HEAVY DUTY DIESEL ENGINE OIL 15W/40 MINERAL. In the engine and the gearbox.
The oil should be changed every 150 hours or every 12 months. Whichever comes first.
Either anti-freeze can be used and the proportions should be as recommended on the container. But never more than 50%.

Hi I am new to the forum and are seeking advice an oil problem with our DV10
The motor ran without water recently - got very hot, destroyed the impeller and blue lots of smoke
It still runs but has lost a lot of its power. There is a small amount of water now in the engine oil - what is more concerning is when you remove the oil filler (when running) oil spurts out
The question is, is it likely to be a blown head gasket, broken ring or another problem

Most crankcases are pressurised to some extent so some oil spraying coming out of the filler would be normal but it's a matter of degree and would be hard to diagnose unless you know what it's normally like. However after overheating then a distorted head and blow head gasket is virtually certain if there is water in the oil I'm afraid.
A compression test would be the quickest way to diagnose the matter.
