I have previously used Volvo Oil, but looking to use a regular make, to avoid having to drive to my local Volvo Agent, which is some distance away.

I know I need to use a mineral oil and have found at Halfords, Mobile Super1000, 15w/40 Mineral oil, ACEA A3 B3
API SL CF.

I am aware that not all mineral oils are equal and have different qualities.

Is this suitable for my Volvo 2030, otherwise what should I use?.

Many thanks

The recommended oil, years ago is now obsolete.
Oil quality have improved, why not use it? Lower wear, less sludge and piston deposits, why disregard these benefits?

This question has been discussed over and over. There is a huge amount of adverse experience in using modern oils in old engines amongst a wealth of users, in automotive, leisure marine and other fields. Every classic car forum you can find will have bad experiences with these oils and warn against them.

Apart from that, as my website says, these oils have been developed to benefit engines running at high speed and power, mainly to overcome cracking of lighter hydrocarbons causing coking. They contain large amounts of expensive additives designed to overcome wear at high revs, oxidation at high temperatures and a number of other problems associated with this type of operation. Auxiliary yacht engines do not come anywhere near requiring these properties, so using synthetic lubricants is spending not inconsiderable amounts of money with no benefits. They won't do your engine any harm but they won't do them much good either.

Just to add, I have order online and will collect tomorrow.

BUT if you add BLACKFRIDAY as a discount code, there is a 50% discount, certainly worth having, in case anyone else needs this oil.

I am sorry. I dont think so.
Just an example: if you are going to replace pistons and moving parts, what would you choose, old spares or modern alloys and modern machined parts or the old ones?

I would go for the old (proven) parts every time. I've see too many failures with "modern" stuff.

PS, One argument I've heard against using modern oils in older engines is that the cleaning chemicals can cause sludge. Whether it's true that they can move residues left by older oils is up for debate.
