Yes it was hot, looking at the pump I'm more and more convinced it was faulty.

Thanks to all - I've been following your posts and have today bought an upright Pela pump (more difficult to find than the cylindrical and cost me £58.49 from Chi Yacht Basin chandler). Look forward to the oil change next week!
