Thank you all who contributed. I had identified 2 - one of which (Pela 6000) was recommended favourably by several posts. I contacted Compass who quoted me only the catalogue number of their more expensive pump and warned me it would not be available until 2002 season start! (£46.99). Cruisermart offered me a special order number for the Pela 6000. Delivery 1 month, cost £69.95. (Honest! I'll copy disbelievers the email quote.) I ordered a Pela 6000 through my local chandler. It arrived 24hrs later - cost £39.99 but I was given 10% discount. (Last year's Compass catalogue price of £24.99 seems no longer available).
Used today. What a revelation! Quick, spotlessly clean in operation - does exactly what it should. Nicely engineered and designed too. The brass barrel one is in the bin!
I found the forum most useful in arriving at this decision - hope this summary may help another equally.

Pela 6000

Tony - I've just orderd one, $48 incl shipping here in the US. So 40 quid doesn't sound too bad. (my son is giving it to me as a birthday present). Thanks for asking the original question as I was sick of getting oil all over the place.

Ooops - silly omission-summary /end

Website: www.Pelaproducts.com. List price stateside $42.99 - confirmed by Arthur's post - thanks. Better details on website than any UK supplier I've found - actually better than on box too. Sorry didn't add this in summary.
