Oil change every 4 months??

I was 'reliably' informed that Makro's own brand is recycled, but didn't bother to read the specs as the extra $s for a proper brand was not enough to risk it.
Interesting and helpfull comments from industry insiders above--thankyou.

I used to get asked to look at domestic gensets, usually Lister aircooled 'Start-o-matics'. One guy had a rented house and wanted me to service his, ' because he had been told it needed the exhaust cleaned out'. I asked when the oil was last changed ( 50hrs recommended). He was surprised and said he just topped it up when needed. Been in the house for over three years. A low guess would have been over 6,000.hrs without an oil change (the inside of the crankcase was 'interesting'). A tribute to Lister, bearing in mind they don't have filters, just strainers. BUT, it was in use every day. On a boat, the short periods of use are not conducive to long life.

I second that-thanks for all the time and effort from everyone, it's really appreciated. I have and will go with the annual change, if hours are within the defined scope.

on a side not, IMO the best thing you could do to look after your marine engine, way beyond making sure your oil meets certain standards, is to use it more.

The biggest failure of boat engines I see is due to lack of use.

Re: Oils

Perkins 4.236 requires a 15W40 API CG/CH 4 ACEA E5 which as far as I know is not sold in supermarkets.

I am aware of the 4 month time factor in the Perkins manual, however this was amended by the British M.O.D years after publication of the manual to a 6 month interval.

I've just acquired a boat with 4.236 (M90) engine and am trying to figure out the oil and impeller type, so the above info is very useful, thanks.
The only manual I can find on the net specifies APC CC oil but that manual is from 1993 so could be replaced.

Anyone got a more recent manual or spec for various parts (i.e. filters, engine oil, impeller etc)

Thanks!

Why not start a new thread rather that trawl this one up

Post 2 will give you most of what you asked

Re: Oils

What's the problem with cycling old threads?

We've just had to read through three old pages of posts to work out what's already been said. Sometimes it's useful, but in this case a new thread would have worked perfectly OK.

Not the end of the World either way, IMO

Oil change shouldn't be based on months only engine hours, ours was 100 hours.

Not true, service intervals are x months or x hours/miles, whichever comes first, for a good reason.

So if you only did 20 hours in the first year, then didn't use the boat for two years, followed by another four years at 20 hours per year, would you be happy leaving the oil in the engine for seven years ?
