Oi!

My dear little hobbit, you should know better than to post in there when you knows I is always checkings in heres firsts /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

'Ello, 'ello, 'ello!

Watcha know about '17th Edition' then? I've got some Olde Worlde round-brown-Junction-Boxes-between-floors that slowly become 'deranged', and I've picked up from my nearby Newey and Aire 'lecky emporium a weighty tome from Ashely called 'Junction Box Guide to the 17th Edition' wot tells me I now need 'maintenance free' jobbies, 'cos I can't screw 'em any more.

The kitchen dichroic downlighters have all gone sulky on me..... and Lady Baggins, too!

The reason is that I'm due a Building Control Inspector visit soon, for another reason, and I want to be able to show the readily-accessible stuff is 'kosher'. I've even resurrected one of my two shiny Multimeters and read up on how to turn it on! And it squeaks, too!

Tomorrow, 'a man's got to do what a man's got to do.....' and get the kitchen lights on again - or else!

Despite no longer being allowed to give official advice, due to not being 17th edition paid up, the boxes are the sort all good sparkies would have used for that purpose anyway. Reason being that they afford better protection to the cable and are generally safer once installed.
Found this PDF download which says it all in detail, but you are of course correct in that the nice man from building control would not be happy (if he knows his job) if he saw the sort you're thinking about

Thanks, Dave. That Ashley pdf booklet you suggest is sitting right here, on my desk, in 'hard copy', and is the cause of much of my misery tonight..... and tomorrow when, having bought and fitted some of the shiny white 'accessible' maintenance-free boxes, I will have to find out why nothing's working yet. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have a grin on me! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh dear, may I suggest that you first identify each cable so that when you take a photo of it, one can see what you've done. Power off purlease. Take a photo and send the high res pic here and I'll look at it, but it's probably a simple mistake so don't loose any sleep over it.

Thanks, Dave. Kidding apart, I did 'isolate and check' before opening any of the little enclosures. The MM thingy wasn't handy, so I used the cat - red paw and black paw.....

If I'm truly stuck, and hit a real impasse over the weekend, I'll send a couple of pics with a virtual beer or two.

No problem Bill, might be easier to use the phone to explain it, but take it all apart and start from scratch as posted in the lounge. It's a simple mistake and one that catches loads of people out, but I'll do a basic wiring diagram that should help

"nice man from building control would not be happy (if he knows his job)"

I feel I better send out an alert to my comrades in the Essex district about this.
