Re: In the hot seat (again)?

You may have spotted in my first paragraph that I talked about sitting in his modern London office.

You're right, I'm not Jeremy Paxman. In my defence I can only say that there was a lot of conversion which didn't make it into the final article which concentrated on the substantive part of his answer, even when what he really said amounted to very little. Supplementary qurestions which simply got negative answers were cut out.

It might be worth just mentioning that the company which applied to set up competing training courses was only planning to operate in the commercial yachting, charter and super yacht field. Of course, once started there is no telling where their ambitions might end.

Circulation misinformation

Your statement circulation 80,000 more than total of IPC mags...wrong.

We have combined ABC audits and a subject to final confirmation BPA audit topping 200,000 for our titles and that is for requested copies, whereas RYA members get their magazine whether they want it/read it or not. That also represents 12 issues per year on all bar one title = 1,900,000 magazines as opposed to RYA quarterly which, at 92,000 members equals 368,000 magazines. There is of course some duplication of readership across IPC titles but our reach substantially ahead of RYA.

As you've got me off on one our websites now hitting in the region of 400,000 unique users across a typical 12 month period according to a recent crunch of our log files.

Here endeth the self gratification...

I should think so too!...when I was a lad, we used to be told that it made you go blind!.....or at least grow hairs on the palm of your hands - you didn't look then did you?

Re: Circulation misinformation

In the light of the recent news about Time Warner AOL (who I believe now own ipc mags) can we believe any crunched numbers coming from there?

Local knowledge

According to the RYA (at the 2001 YMI's conference) a large part of UK's success at the Sydney Olympics was down to spending six months there to obtain the local knowledge, particularly of wind conditions. So what's special about Windermere?

Re: Circulation misinformation

You can always rely on cornishman to defend the RYA and anything to do with it! I wonder when the RYA forum starts up, or has it, maybe they are frightened of some of the comments they may get. Have they got a forum?

Or Morcambe bay, Ribble estuary, or around Anglesey, Phwelli or any number of places!

Not really. I have just read an interesting site about a cruise down the Canal to Pier Head Liverpool, and neither it nor my maps of the area show anywhere that I would like to race a keelboat in, especially as the racers these days demand windward/leeward courses rather than what they often call "boring triangles".
Perhaps you could put me right on this because the Games are called The Manchester Commonwealth Games (see the official website). And, Yeah, I know about the shooting at Bisley.

Re: Circulation misinformation

Sorry but my post about circulation figures had nothing to do with defence of the RYA. I don't think that the RYA has anything to do with what games are chosen for the event anyway so perhaps it is a little unfair to criticise them for the absence of sailing.
I only defend the RYA from criticism from people who appear to have only a scant knowledge of what they do for sailing, and perhaps don't have their particular interest dealt with in the way they want. I usually direct my own criticisms directly to the department concerned because that is my pivilege as a personal member who has paid his subs for nigh on 27 years.

Ballroom dancing

Should keep this country of whingers happy, dancing is a sport now. We are a nation surrounded by sea but I think certain factions of the yachting world think it should be reserved for the chosen few, these are usually the ones who's boats never leave the pontoon.

Greater Manchester?

I notice that the shooting events are taking place at Bisley, in Surrey. Either Manchester has got a lot bigger or the requirement to hold events near Manchester is not as rigid as people think.
