OHM Volt meter

Ref "burning out the meter" The most likely way you can "burn out" a meter is when the meter has been left on current range. Often with the lead + plug in the amps hole.
The enext time you use the meter you want to check volts and the amp meter function tries to short out the battery so blowing a fuse internally in the meter or melting the shunt.
So make a point if you use the meter for checking curren to always revert the settings to volts.
OP will find the cheapest meters will do far more than he can learn to use. Cheap is good good luck olewill

Any recommendations of a decent make?

Cheers

Just got to watch for parallax errors

While I remain convinced that electrickery is the work of the devil, meters fall into the same category as torches. Can never have too many!

While I'm drawing meaningless comparisons, the AVO8 is the equivalent of Bowditch American Practical Navigator. It's the dog's bolox. It weighs a ton and would be pretty impractical on a boat, though.

The picture above caused me to take a look at my AVO8. Mine is ex-military surplus with NSN 6625-99-943-1532. I also checked the 15v battery (with a cheap, digital meter)and it's down to 8.3v. Ebay sells them for about £10, much more than a perfectly useable multi meter.
