Oh why Oh why didn't I discover MP3 players when I was doing those long boring sea passages?
Recently I won an Ipod Shuffle and promptly discovered how to get free audio books (I'm not much of a music man). Now I am making quite a collection and it would have been sooooo cool to have been able to sit at my wheel on auto pilot keeping an eye out whilst enjoying a good book.

To be fair to you,

although MP3 technology has been around for ages, it has only been in the last couple of years that small players have taken off.

iPods are fine for the younger generations, but the cost of buying Apple products have made it an unattractive proposition - IF the operation was so clunky (as in trying to send a text message on a mobile phone), that one would give up in frustration.

The Apple products are good but only this year (?) are now friendly to use. Some of the el-cheapo types aren't. All are great if you want to play the same stuff again and again - fine for pop music, but not for a full blown classical collection.

I could go on rabbiting on, but have said enough for now.

Re: To be fair to you,

Actually I have sacked the Ipod Shuffle, maybe 'retired' is a better word, and bought some similar looking MP3 players off Ebay. The cost was 1p each + P&P.

These are easier to use than the Shuffle and one isn't forced into using the ITunes program, one just drags & drops one's choices.
Much easier and user friendly.

Well! you can download stuff legally, books that are now out of copyright at http://librivox.org/ also at www.gutenberg.org .

If you are a naughty person you can use the same system as kids do to get music by hunting for stuff on say Bit Che, free program at http://www.convivea.com/ then downloading what you find using something like Frostwire, free program at http://www.frostwire.com/ . There's also Utorrent, Limewire and others you can use to download also free but only have one program in case of conflicts. Make sure that the program you use only 'sees' the folder you are sharing with others and always virus scan anything you download.

Byron,

Happy now? I have put a temporary new one up until I find something I like. I shall miss the old one, I loved it.

If you have a problem downloading or putting them on your Ipod. PM me. I have about 7 GB of books in my library so far, of course it depends on your taste. I can't give them to you unless you pop around with a portable hard drive or laptop. Incidentally I find the Ipods are best for these because they remember where you switched off.

Thanks for that I have a Sony Walkman that remembers where you are. I will let you know how I get on when I can find the lead to connect to my laptop......dohhhhh.

YAY!

Thank you Byron!

But on reflection, who am I to say what avatar you should have even if it is bloody annoying. If you like it that much then go back to it, I can always put my hand over the screen!
