When you really cock something up badly there's always a big audience.

Coming back into Exmouth Docks a few weeks back in my Avon 3.1 RIB having just been out to Dawlish Warren to clean it out and empty the water out, sauntered back, lovely day, sun shining, crowds of people admiring my boat handling skills, you can imagine the scene. Just about to enter the docks when out comes the new tripping boat, about 60' long, almost as wide as the docks entrance. No problem thinks I as I expertly park up against the pontoon to let said boat pass. Just as I can see the transom I thought, ah, what happens if he also wants to park on the pontoon, so decided as soon as he was past I'd shoot into the docks.

So I pushes off but at the same time he decides to stop so ina matter of less than a few seconds not only am I pinned back up to the pontoon but his prop wash has literally filled my nice dry inflatable up level with the tubes, so now I'm soaked, the dog's swimming trying to miss the floating fuel tank, the crowd's laughing, the Sailing club commodore who also happens to be a fellow diver witnessed the events from his dory as well as the dockmaster and half of bleedin Exmouth!

I stoically ignored all the calls for an encore and with the smug grin having been well and truly wiped off my face I slunk off to find an abandoned saucepan to bale the water out with, took a good 15 minutes or more. Thank goodness it was an inflatable or otherwise I'd definitely have sunk!! Now that would have been embarassing!!

Re: Martyn\'s Law

tho i am now getting confused over meddreamer (called martyn) and another, martynwhitely, also called martyn, i supose. And both from oop north too, where everyone is called the same thing to save money on name tags and so they can give each other the same birthday card back and forth for twenty years until it falls to bits.

Oh dear Longjohn - you do have my sympathies :)

On a much smaller scale last weekend I just could not get my Windy to raft up against another boat to save my life - and right in front of the yacht club too.

I blame it all on either a) the new props I had fitted or b) the race of the outgoing tide. Maybe its because I'm a crap skipper??

Re: crap@boating

I pleased you are finally facing reality on this issue. Also, note that all those times you came in without a problem - were lucky flukes! oh heck.

Re: Ma\'s Law

I thought all blokes for oop north had names starting with Ma......... (apart from Haydn) :-))

because that's the definition of really cocking it up badly - if there's no audience, then it's probably just a bit of a nuisance. This is very closely related to Martyn's Law, and Wignall's Corollary. Perhaps we could name it LJS's Theorem.

Up North the most important law is 'COAL'S LAW'.

....Always pack up your own sandwiches before a long motorway trip. Never buy them from a service station.

BTW Graham,

I have just tried your 'Buy My Boat' web link and found only a blank domain name page.

Your right Graham, working fine now.

Do you get much interest, thought it would be a much sought after boat?

Sophisticated Northerners

COLESLAW!!

You are just trying to impress the southerners. I've seen you dripping and tripe sandwiches.

I like the way TCM has gone all posh - he's a Yorkshireman in denial I believe.

That was not me that lost the new guchy shoes at the Crooked Spaniards Inn. That was my mate Melvin. But they chopped his legs off not long after. So he never missed the shoes. Very true and very sad. But he's still laughing.

Re: Sophisticated Northerners

I have most certainly not gone all posh. In fact, i made some shelves, which isn't too posh at all. Especially the way i got this little lad in the diy shed to use the big saw to cut up the wood just the right width (158 mm), then tookem to the checkout and askem how much they wanted for this load of useless offcuts.
