Oh SH!!!!!T, why did that happen?????!!!

Sorry to hear of your problem. I. An only begin to imagine. I had to dismantle a crew toilet last year. Blocked pipe. Pressurised s£&t. Lovely.

We are heading your way in a few week to st tropez - if they give us a berth !

I have a Jabsco diaphragm pump for emptying the holding tank at sea. I replaced a similar pump about 5 years ago, and it's worked fine... UNTIL NOW!! at some point during the last emptying session, the clamp ring around the pump sheared, pumping copious amounts of brown soup into the bilges. The smell alerted us to a problem, but by then, it was all too late :sick:I cannot express how vile this was, and what an awful job it was cleaning it all out 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮.

This now poses the question, how can I prevent this happening again? It seems that a diaphragm pump is the preferred choice for the application, but both Whale and Jabsco offer replacement clamping rings, so I suspect they are known to fail. I really don't want to repeat the experience, and considering that the pump is used at sea, with the engines running, it's impossible to notice a problem before it's too late. Any suggestions??

Once fixed cat stink remover from a pet shop will get rid of all organic smells. No perfume it’s an enzyme. Works on diesel leaks too.

Good to know.. I've had a few 'whoopsie' moments myself, including my black tank pump-out pump corroding its bolts and splitting in two, in the past.

A slight thread detour - Perhaps I'm a little biased but everything from recent Jabsco I have on the boat, has disappointed me. Waste pumps, fresh water pumps, electric heads. I'm progressively ditching every Jabsco product that I can.

Tecma stuff seems generally better - more expensive, though.

Rude springs to mind.
Wasn’t intended .
Apologies if you read it as such .
Let’s drill down into the mode of failure ( if I may with the clique šŸ˜€- self styled ) .
All you are gonna do by beefing up the clamp , the blue plastic ring is move the pressure point to the next failure point.
Let’s leave that though there . Hypothetically it could be the diaphragm or what ever ? How knows until you have been meddling with OEM spec ? Over to you on that and hopefully for the sake of others you will update ?

It a 8hitty blue plastic ring for a reason .

With the Jabsco macerator + impeller . Adding the caveat carry a spare ( €80 ) you will not be on here again with your 8hitty problem .

Ax said rarther than ā€œ operate to destruction ā€œ - common theme on here BTW ….just like you have done …..I did randomly take the thing on the cockpit table ( sent bleach through it and wore surgical gloves ) once in 9 yrs ā€œ service itā€
Cost €10 for a fresh rubber impeller .

It never failed .

Try it change tack .
b4 mobo ing we regularly sailed yacht raced ……..we had a sail boat and it’s all about results.
