It's nice work if you can get it. I think the really experienced ones average about a month's worth of editing for a 20min video. Wonder what the hourly rate works out at.

What's up with the Yanmar? At least you're the right side of Biscay now!

We once broke a crankshaft (accidentally!) on a charter; now that was a seriously sick engine... Last we saw of it, it was being craned out while we transferred to our replacement boat.

Major oil leak (liveable with, saves on oil changes)

Won't start - voltage drop, probably easily fixed (have been managing to start it by spinning it with the decompressors open first)

And today it just died after an hour - no power, won't rev, just dies.

A man is coming on Friday.

Forgive me but the OP seems not very technically confident with machinery ... bear with me here..
if ( if!) the OP is intent on heading on to the Caribbean , just plonk an outboard on the back and be done with it all!
Simple, so simple
And use the space created for grape storage and extra water cans..
And begone, tales of woe !

Biscay is a long way behind us, the tank was totally cleaned out in the refit and there is no sign of any muck in the primary filter/water separator filter. Pretty sure the engine is only firing on one cylinder. A man called Jaio is coming to see us tomorrow - he comes highly recommended.

Re. The outboard suggestion... total non-starter on the tiny transom of our boat, particularly as we have a windvane.

I'm only slightly mechanically handicapped, but I do know enough to know when I at least need a professional diagnosis to avoid wasting hours chasing down blind alleys.

Cost us 73 euros for a tow into our berth from the reception pontoon here in Cascais ?

( I take it as given that you can feel each injector pipe ‘ pinging’ as you wind it over.
And have ascertained which is the redundant cylinder when trying to start by releasing one decompress lever at a time . Etc
Worries me that excess oil pressure by blowby might be the reason for oil being forced out...

Great idea to get an ‘ is it worth it?’ sound engineer in.

Perhaps he will look at the fuel rack movement too if the motor won’t rev. And explain the diagnostics his Yanmar mind of experience follows..

For what it’s worth , re Outboards: They ‘ can’ of course be hung off the quarter or indeed the transom , even bracketed out to one side of even old Skerrycruisers . And they are really really narrow!
Or plonked on the dinghy strapped alongside ..

Obv, you prob don’t want to go down that route unless absolutely forced too but, Oh man, the cost of just one tow is the cost of an entire outboard bracket. To me. Hurty.

Ha! Head gasket gone, oil full of water.

Lovely guy coming round to remove it next week and assess the damage.

Good to have the diagnosis, hope the cure isn't too pricey. ?

Might end up in Portugal for winter? I found Cascais an expensive place but there's a load on here can tell you all about the Algarve. Once you get round St Vincent, different world. You may have experienced that before?

Hope you get sorted soon. ?
