We need a 4 man cannister liferaft so that we feel safe and secure, warm and fuzzy. I stupidly, foolishly rang Marine Megastore for a quotation. They "offered" me a Seago Offshore 4 man can for £570, supposedly delivered straight from Seago. That was yesterday.

Today, it arrived. Direct from Seago. Brand new March 2015 manufactured.

Darn, what am I going to say about MM now? I've bought a good quality gas cooker from them last year for £150 less than anyone else's price and now a liferaft for about £70 less than anyone else. Both arrived next day for a pitiful postage charge. The cooker was perfect unlike the two that came from a very similar named but much more respected company.

Could it be that MarineMegastore are now really rather good?

[h=3]Product Description[/h]Suffolk Marine Safety will discount the first service of this item (due in 3 years) by 15%

I don't know what they charge for servicing, but it would have to be quite a lot for the 15% discount to offset the £80 difference in up-front price. And that's assuming you would have serviced with them anyway, and that you're effectively giving them a chunk of your money for three years.

The problem with them is when something goes wrong. E.g. they sent me a dinghy I hadn't ordered and didn't want (they could have emailed and said that the one I had ordered was not available). It cost me £50 to send it back to them.

I think most companies are protective of their brand and reputation. MM doesn't appear to be. They sell under various names. Why do you think that is the case?

Then forfeit the 12 yr warranty

I heard a story about a liferaft that began to fail after a few months at sea in the UV rays. Dick Durham 'Amazing sailing stories'.

12 years warranty is nothing if it fails so service it yourself and buy TWO :-)) so you have that spare when you really need it :-))

It's a bit late so maybe I lost the diff here , how do you service your own life raft ? Who sign it off to say it been service ?
£80 for a life raft service , that's cheap ? The labour out here in the Med I been quoted is around 150 Euros and that's without any thing that needs to be replace .

Yep :)

£80 is how much more Sailorman's preferred supplier charges to buy the raft. It's nothing to do with the service price.

You service it the same way as someone who works for Ocean Safety or whoever. Nobody signs it off - if you did it yourself then you obviously know it was done, so what does signing anything achieve?

That £80 is in fact £29 if you care to check the web link

Its a bit daft having two companies with similar names.I know one is good and the other not so good from what i read. As i can never remember which one is bad i avoid both!!!

I think Marine Megastore also trades under other names eg Talamex Marine Chandlery as Megstore's returns address is also the address for Talamex (or am I mistaken?).
