I was due down at the marina on New Years Eve, as there was a party in the bar. But, harbour master told me that as my boat was frozen solid, unless I had put the heating on the day before, he would have to have paramedics on stand by for the morning to defrost me.

I decided to heed his advice and went to my neighbours to drink their beer and then set clock for 6.30am on New Years day.

Was surprised that despite it being brass monkey in the morning, there was no frost on the car - none at all, despite it being -2.5c

Once out of town I started to see Jack Frost landscape with the temperature at a steady -3.5c, but at Conwy, and helping to keep Haydn's pipes frozen solid, it was -5.5c

At Port Dinorwic is was back up to a warm -3.5c but I was staggered to see half an inch of hoar frost all over the boat, which was surrounded by a sheet of ice on the surface of the fresh water dock.

The cup of hot coffee placed on the hatch lock failed to melt the ice so I could open it, and once I had connected the electricity 4 litres of boiling water failed to melt the ice, so I couldn't even open the hatch to turn on the boat electrics or turn on the fuel.

Luckily, I had arranged to meet my neighbours, "The Scousers" who kindly offered to let me go out on their centrally heated boat.

I made sure they prepared it properly first.

We made our way into the lock, only to discover one of the sluice gates would not close. All hands to the deck and with screwdriver and meter, the problem was quickly sorted by tripping the control box and dropping the sluice. It meant that raising the water would be double the time, but at least we could get back in later.

It was pretty rough out there.

And even squeezing past Fort Belan, we had to hang on.

As we got close to the bar we could see the waves rising up as it shallows and you can just make out the mountains through the sea mist.

Lady Scouse did much of the skippering, while others made tea and served biscuits.

Eventually we got far enough out so that even the mountains were little more than a suggestion.

So we turned around and headed back.

It was a great day out and a big thank you to my neighbours for letting me tag along. Hearts of gold and I still kept my wallet.

Great pics Major.

Hope your engines are ok.

Cheers

Al.

The engines will be fine. Suzuki's are almost bullet proof.

I did notice however, although there was ice on the inside of the widows - now cleared off and oil filled radiator installed - non of the on board water was frozen, showing that even fresh water radiates heat into the boat.

Great set of photos /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I didnt get on well when I added a heater to my last boat , it just made the damp warm and helps mould.
A dehumidifier keeps the cabin dry.
when the cold comes the dehumidifier stops taking damp out but the cabin is already dry anyway.
although the dehumidifier stops drawing damp it still runs which helps keep the freezing temps away.

Nice one, brill pics. Was delighted myself with the few days out I got over the XMas and I just got a phonecall off a forumite - we're doing an overnighter tomorrow - it's gonna be coldddd!

Are you sure that's your boat? The cockpit doesn't appear to be full of carp (anag)!

[/ QUOTE ]

The third engine and tender are in my garage, the bucket is in the cockpit locker, the lobster pot Kawasaki dumped on my boat, I dumped on someone else's and and prawn pot is attached to my regular berth.

And, of course, it being out of season, there are not boxes of Bass waiting to be gutted and prepared for the freezer.

DAKA, I am taking the dehumidifier down this weekend.

I had a similar problem with icy decks .... and pontoon .... afew days ago. A few buckets of sea water thrown around the place soon sorts it out.

[/ QUOTE ]

And where was I going to get that from? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sea was 200 metres away and was 15 feet below sea wall and my bucket and spare rope were in the cockpit locker, which was frozen solid.

Great pics Major

We were visiting the outlaws near Denbigh, and in need of a boaty fix I took swmbo down to Conwy for a stroll around the marina yesterday. It was obviously a fantastic day for being out - so calm and very little wind - but brass monkeys even in the middle of the day, and in shaded spots the frost didn't thaw all day. After an hour or so we were happy to retreat into the Mulberry for a warming drink.

Once again great pics! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

That'll teach you to go up the posh end!!

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, I am a bit sheltered on the south wall and the winter sun never gets there.

Don't worry when the posh gits get their boats back in the water, I'll be kicked back to the Council Estate, where I know I really belong.

Blimey small World.

Yeah they weren't cheap, but compared to many YCs we've visited the atmosphere was warm and friendly, and the food was excellent too.

We're now back in the big smokey unfortunately, otherwise I would buy you one for the NY. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
