Oh boll***ks. Anyone in Antibes got dive kit?

Head of International Rescue, operating from a remote island-based hq? It's got to be LJS, surely...:D

Thunderbirds are go! We need a live video feed so we can direct from remote location.

How many boats and divers will be involved with the search?. It's looking like there will be more international co operation than you'd normally find at the UN.

LOL, I understand that Titan Salvage made a decent job at Giglio island, maybe they could handle also this new challenge... :D
...alternatively, couldn't EBY be able to supply a replacement? Just a thought.

I daresay they could, and probably, in due course, will. However.... That's not the point! :D

Well, it hasn't ended well, sadly. Dived twice, but the weed is really long and really I've got no chance of finding it. There's been lots of encouragement and practical help from jfm and tcm who are both also here, plus jonathanb showed up to say hi and nick_h helped from long distance by providing a spare cylinder. So, as mapism suggested, it's a phone call to EBY on Monday to ask for help. I can't say I'm not disappointed, cos I am. But I did try.

Whoops, sorry if in hindsight I've been a bit of a jinx, that wasn't the idea of course. :)
Anyway, I perfectly understand the difficulty, fwiw.
Weeds on the seabed can hide just about anything.
No prizes for guessing why I know... though it was just a hook, in my case.

No apology required. The moral of this particular story is probably (a) carry dive kit on board and (b) know when you are beaten. I wish I'd realised how fruitless the task was, then I wouldn't have spent two days wasting my time looking for it. Ah well.

After a very lovely day in Villefranche yesterday, the plan today was for a similarly idle time at the Iles des Lerins off Cannes. Alas my cunning plan was scuppered shortly after we anchored, when a critical bit of the bimini frame decided to commit hari-kiri and jump overboard.

So, a relaxing day it has not been; although we're only in 5m of water and the vis is crystal, we are over long weed and I can't see the offending bit of stainless. In fact I've spent most of the day snorkelling looking for it, but all I have to show for my efforts is a sunburnt back. Bah.

I'm not quite ready to give up yet though, so I need to get hold of some scuba gear and come back tomorrow. Anybody got anything in PV? Or is it a case of heading down to The dive centre at La Rague and renting.

Isn't that the same place where you recovered JFM's safety rail a few years ago?

C) don't put the lat and long of your treasure on a public forum! :)

Good god these fancy boats just fall apart. What you need is a bayliner and less consumption of compressed air.

I think I may start following behind these fancy boats. I'll have enough parts to build my own in a year or two.

Runs away in zigzag fashion feeling several red laser points trying to lock on to a position between my shoulder blades.

Well, while you are around Villefranche with your fine salvage equipment, you might as well get rid of the notorious anchor-tangling monster...
I'm not sure it can be worth any ransom, but maybe the local forumites might offer you a bottle of champagne for cleaning an otherwise lovely anchorage spot! :)

not want to be pedantic, but that monster frame was on BA's anker in Villefranche,
while Jtb's and his buddy's diving activity's took place between les lerins

coincidently today in another lovely bay in Croatia (Cavtat) I recovered a BIG old anker
the winch could hardly lift it.

@Jtb,
I feel sad for you Jimmy, despite the international SAR, that you didn't get the piece

lessons to be learned (if I dare saying)
- dive gear on board is usefull
- when something goes overboard, immediately throw a weight with a rope behind it,
It allowed me to find a very tiny part a few years back in a Anchorage near porquerolles.

best rgds to all !

Yep, I did say that the monster was in VF, actually.
My mistake anyway: I just re-checked the OP because I had in mind that JTB was in VF, and in fact he did mention it, but obviously I read that post too quickly and missed the Lerins part... :o

All that aside, that Admiralty looks much nicer than the monster, and seems to be complete of all its parts.
You recovered it, I suppose? A bit of paint, and it would be perfect for a seaside villa entrance....

Haha, actually I put the VF monster there. Sorry Bart. I picked it up couple of months before you, drifited with it 100m at 1am in the morning, then managed to release it, in precisely the spot you anchored later in the year.

Jimmy, that was a very stalwart effort and I'm sorry you didn't find it.

The needle was too small and the haystack too big unfortunately, and there was a breeze/choppy water so there was no chance to see it from the surface. The main thing is we had a nice lunch (22 people on Match briefly, mostly via this forum!) and verified that 2013 was a good year for Cloudy Bay. TCM sends regards to everyone.

Someone mentioned dropping one of the removable "goal post" swim platform guard rails off match. That was summer 2011. We got lucky there and recovered it. In the stupid irony of these things, I had 2 spare guard rails made for Match 2 and keep them in the engine room. Never used them. It is a standard feature of boats that if you don't have a spare for something you'll drop it over the size and need it, whereas if you pay £££ for a spare and £££ fuel to carry I around, you'll never need it. That's boats. :D :D
