Offshore racing in the Olympics....?

Now this is interesting! I've long thought that a doublehanded offshore race in Fig 2s or similar would be a sensational Olympic sport!

Just think. The day after the Olympics finishes there would be terrific bargains on shorthanded cat 1 boats. I love it.

I guess if you're going offshore then you have to look at the events that are the most compelling now. I really like the idea of it being the "marathon" of the sailing disciplines. I actually think that could have real traction, as to non sailors the classes all look pretty similar, and are just different styles of boat going around the same track. To say "and these guys will start now and finish 48 hours later" is something quite different and I expect could go down pretty well with viewers. Add in making it compulsory mixed, and it could really be a winner.
