I was wondering if anyone out there had any useful advice or thoughts that would help me plan my career.
I am currently studying at University to finish a Commerce Degree, I also have a Bachelor of Science in Physics and am wanting to go to sea, preferably on cruise ships. How difficult is it to be sponsored by a company such as P&O Cruises and what job opportunities are available afterwards.
I have read articles about Eastern Europeans taking over the officer positions, as well as down-scaling of these positions due to technological advances, how true are these claims?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

It may help to look at the other "Cadet" threads in this forum. Just remember Cruise Ships may sound romantic but there are other options for satisfying careers at sea.

If you can find the address and/or phone number of Maersk - somewhere in London - they had an advert in yesterdays Independant newspaper offering cadetships.

I've found it for you

http://www.maersk.co.uk/

The Maersk Co.Ltd, 1 Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London, E14 5DP - 020 7712 5000

I spent 25 years at sea as an electrical officer with P&O Containers. I also had a short spell with Maersk.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I'm not really looking for romance, I'm more concerned with what is happening in the industry with regards to Eastern Europeans coming into the labour market.
Thanks Philip for the post on Maersk, that was most appreciated.

after some 35 years in the m.n. I have witnessed many changes. however educated qualified manpower in the core positions on any vessel pays the ship owner dividends in the end. replacing north western europeans with cheap labour from elesewhere will reduce costs initially but often cost more in the long term.
as to the future - european intigration will dilute standards accross the board, not only in shipping but ashore, and lead to the e.u's eventual economic collapse.
however, world shipping will continue as approx 98 % of goods travel by sea.
have some fun in the sun - look for sponsership and join the m.n. even if it is for a short period.
