Off up river

We are off up river from Bray for a week or so later today so keep an eye open for us and we will keep an eye open for you.

I intend to be nice to rowers, wave to narrowboats, let others get in front of me if they feel they have to, quietly wait at locks when necessary without getting stressed and say thank you to the lockie - be he/she a regular, assistant or volunteer.
If anyone else using the river is rude or discourteous to me I will assume they have suffered a deprived childhood and are deserving of my consideration and constraint.

In short I intend to try and enjoy a relaxing few days doing what I like best.

I may even speak with Byron if he permits me to do so :D

However, I am not likely to be mooring at the Shillingford Bridge !

we are planning to head off next wednesday evening for about 10 days. The Plan is to get to cookham that evening and then the following 3 days, spend the day getting as far as we can (comfortably), so as to see as much as the river as possible. Was thinking sonning first day, then Dorchester, then Oxford. Then we would turn around and spend the whole week coming back in short relaxing journeys, stopping off early in the afternoon.
 
Now gentlemen, please stop painting these idyllic scenarios when I would love to be doing the same but alas I am stuck in a hot sweaty studio taking photos of a plastic diamond!

I hope you both have a wonderful time and if you get the chance please post a picture or two to keep this poor chap going until it's his turn to get a few days away on the river.

We are also off later today until next Sunday, leaving Windsor and plan to get to Oxford.

If you see a Bayliner 285 'Akvavit' say hi :-)
 
oxford moorings

Can anyone tell us what the moorings are like at Oxford. I prefer quiet moorings, where I can relax and sleep easy at night not having to worry about people (ie, local yoofs) being noisy or worse near the boat. That's why I don't plan on mooring up either at the park in Marlow or the Park in Henley.

Are there 'quiet' moorings in or near Oxford, or are they all town centre / close to residential areas. Not having been that way, I don't know what to expect.

We were cast off once at 4 a:m when moored on Christchurch meadows, despite taking the line onboard. There are few rings set into the face of the wall which might save you. Otherwise it's generally quiet.

Surprisingly the moorings above Osney Lock are comparatively quiet - considering that the bridge carries one of the main routes into the city. Usually no problems there. but they do get full early.

If you fancy a fantastic view - especially in the morning, drop an anchor on Port meadow. Late summer mists are magical. Check you depth though, as I draw a lot less.

Couple of places down here where I will drop the anchor when overnighting plus a couple of metres of chain ,just in case.
The cleverer bit is remembering your actions the following morning !

Although I have never experienced anyone casting off my lines on this boat or our one we had years ago, I do nearly always drop anchor when moored overnight just in case.

I also keep a handy piece of heavy boat repair kit near me in case I'm lucky enough to catch 'em doing it :-)

Anybody Kno were ye ancient marinier and his cute but perfectly proportioned boat are at the moment ???????

As weather is bit rubbish and not wanting to use my boat in case it gets dirty,may well go and see him.......................:)

I hope the weather picks up for you guys cruising up river this week. Tipping it down here at Harleyford as I sit with my mug of tea looking out.

I did try to see if I could post a photo of my view right now but it seems it not doable from the iPad.
 
Lovely evening yesterday, great BBQ weather, blue skies and sunshine. We are currently moored above Shiplake lock opposite Shiplake college. They had a jazz band and another live band later on the opposite bank to keep us entertained well into the evening. Dancing on the bathing platform had to be indulged in! :)

Continuing up to Wallingford now.

Still can't work out how to upload a photo from Dropbox on the iPad? The button to choose the image on the forum website is greyed out so no way to direct to the image in Dropbox and if I copy and paste the link from Dropbox it tells me the link is invalid.

I have the original iPad, not iPad 2 so could this be the problem?

If you don't mind letting me know how to do it it would be very much appreciated :-)
 
Boatone is indeed still heading up river. I passed him a few minutes ago outside Uri's place at Sonning.

We are returning from Letchlade. Would urge anyone who can fold their boat down enough to get under Osney bridge to give a go. A very different river to the lower and middle Thames
