Off to look at my first yacht tomorrow! Advice sought!

You've had lots of good advice above and I can't add much except to say that I imagine your training would have equipped you with navigational skills, but an RYA keelboat course would help to familiarise you with handling sailing boats of this size. A good sailing manual will inform you about the finer points of inshore pilotage which obviously is not a big concern in large bulkers :) Also I would recommend reading up on the general maintenance and lore etc of sailing boats, PBO is not too bad, and of course this Forum is a mine of information.
That Silhouette looks good, you may possibly get for 1700-2000. Good to start off with something of this sort of size and price range, as maintenance will be relatively cheap and if you hit another boat, it doesn't have the weight to do serious damage:)
Good Luck and Fair Winds!

thinking of getting something smaller that I can potter about on in the Irish sea, firstly to prepare me for the jump up to something bigger,
I assume that the first step is not the live-aboard you are thinking of. Some replies seem to think you want to live on a Silhouette :hororr:

Been for a little mooch at the Hurley 18 (the other boats were not sea worthy, from what I gather) - It looks clean, and tidy; but there's no sign of an outboard.

I'm going to refrain from jumping in; as it's just not the right time now; as I could get a phone call tomorrow; and I'll be off to China, or somewhere on a Bulk Carrier for 9 months, to get the remaining Sea time that I need to qualify for my COC.

I've got a few grand saved up- but as someone pointed out, I'm only on Cadets wages at the moment; and boats are a continuous source of money consumption. I could cut corners, by going for a swing mooring (which seems like a head ache) - but I'd want my boat kept in a marina- and that would cost £2200; which a considerable chunk of that I've got so far.

Realistically, I should wait until I've passed my orals; and I'm on my first few contracts as an officer. When I get back from sea though, I'll have a few more pennies saved up on top of what I already have; and I wouldn't rule out getting something then- but I'd want something a little more substantial than an Hurley 18 - perhaps the 24/70 or a centaur; or something nearer the 30 foot mark.

Thanks to everyone for your helpful advice, it's much appreciated!

I shall return en temps voulu

:)
