Read a couple of Neil Gunns novels recently, rather heavy going at times though poetic, you need to have an empathy for Scotland and limited sympathy for landlords. I noticed that in 1937 he gave up his job to go sailing around the Inner Hebridies and to write about it so I looked for a copy. It was republished as a paper back in 1990 in New York so plenty of cheap second hand copies available from American bookshops through Amazon for a pittance.
Really interesting for those who visit places like Oban, Tobermory and the islands, how different it was in those times when adventurous sailors were a small minority in working harbours.
Off in a Boat, Neil Gunn, New Amsterdam Books or the original by Faber and Faber.

I read it a couple of years ago. I thought it was OK but I found all the historical references e.g. to the Highland clearances a bit heavy going.
