A friend in Kemah, Texas, just sent this picture of an unusual rig.

I assume the aft rollerfurling sail sheets to the head of the mizzenmast and fills in the area between the main and mizzen masts, above the main. There's probably a name for it.

Very interesting rig generally, that 'mizzen' is so far aft it looks more like a yawl. And the main mast is very far aft. Seems like a lot of sail is aft of the centre of something or other.

It's a cutter head ketch with a staysail, for sure. What I'm intrigued by is the sail on the stay running from the head of the mainmast to the base of the mizzen.

Crappy picture, he took it with a phone.

The "odd sail" is called a mule, sheeted to the mizzen masthead as you say.

I've never seen a roller one before, but if it works...

Yes, the wishbone mule. You learn something new every day.

The photo at the top of the thread isn't very clear, but I can't see a wishbone boom in it (I'm also not at all sure how you would attach a wishbone to the luff of a roller sail). So this isn't a "wishbone mule", just a plain mule.

I'm sure you're right, it's a plain mule. I think I prefer the alternative name, a main backstay sail, which describes what it is!

I've since learnt that the boat is called Dances with Dragons.
