Odd feature names

It has long amused me that the Firth of Forth hosts groups of rocks called Cow and Calves south of Inchcolm and Hen and Chickens by Culoss. I've not yet found the Sow and Piglets but I keep looking ...

Probably in memory of some highwayman... Friends of mine live in Scratchface Lane, probably named before the advent of tractor-driven flails for "trimming" hedges...
Apparently not. A local expert did tell me how the name came about but I have forgotten. It has nothing to do with violence and is just a corruption of some dialect phrase I think.

Newfoundland has got some good ones: Uncle Tom's Rock, Neverfail Shoal, Rose Blanche ( corruption of Roche Blanc) Grande Bruit (big noise, there's a waterfall in the middle of the village)

Or further south, Rattlesnake Shoals, Lookout Shoals and Frying Pan Shoals

We were sailing along the South Coast when we heard a good radio call on 16. Not very good radio etiquette from the fishermen, but a great put down from the Pro's!

"'Ere Galatea, you is right on my trawling runmate. Gunna move?"

"We are the Trinity House Buoy Vessel We are servicing the Cardinal at Cow Rock. We are not moving. Your Call!"

Did they have the correct day marks hoisted for restricted manoever ability ? If not the fisherman was correct.

Rubha Dubh (somewhere on the West Coast of Scotland) caused myself and three other half cut Englishfolk to laugh hysterically. Doesn't seem quite so funny 25 years on and sober.

If we're allowed inland features Fan Y Big always used to make me giggle.

Kick 'em Jenny is a submerged volcano to the North of Granada WI.

Simpsons Bay Lagoon in St Maarten WI had a hill called Witches Tit, but the name appears to have been altered now.

There are countless Rubha Dubh’s in Scotland - as just means black headland or promontory. And many countless more Dubh Sgeir’s (black rock).
Not sure it is a side splittingly funny name - many weirder ones in England.

How do I know-it was a radio call overheard on 16. But they were transmitting AIS which clearly told who they were and what they were doing.

As an aside, Trinity House are among the most respected of Seafarers. I expect they complied in every respect to regs for day signals.

AFAIK, Fishing vessels, even with gear down must still give way to another vessel if that vessel is restricted in manouvering. If Galatea was hoisting a bloody great Cardinal, that would limit its ability to manouver!!

Not to far from me is Bloodslat lane, that's in Broomholm, Holm of course meaning island, that's actually just inland by a few feet of Bacton and Walcott which are on the coast
