Oceanwave Wifi

We have oceanwave in Dun Laoghaire marina and have had no problems with it. We even have a local number to ring if there is a problem. A bit dear, but then that's compared to domestic charges.

Oceanwave folded, now operated by Spectrum, who regularly offer wifi facilities to UK airports..Seems ok, ie no download throttle but desperately slow at certain states of the tide, imo..

I tried it a while back and was not impressed so ended up buying a 3G USB Dongle service from Vodafone for £14 (although i think all airtime providers offer the same type of service). The advantage for me is that it works everywhere there is 3G coverage not just in marinas and as the software is also loaded onto the USB dongle it will work on any Windows PC evenif you have not loaded the VF software from the CD. It may be worth looking at as an alternative to a marina based service. Cheers

Pop

Oceanwave seem to have gone pop. In Premier marinas they seem to have been replaced by Spectrum using the same SSID and equipment. At Yarmouth last weekend the Oceanwave hotspot was free - though how long that will last, I don't know.

Be interested if anyone knows whats happening at Buckler's Hard with their Oceanwave wifi....

Interesting feedback so far. My direct contact with Oceanwave and they point me to Spectrum as overall services provider now.

I'm currently with BT; excellent dongle but piss-poor support so looking to change. Trialling O2 dongle and cloud at the moment, so far so good but between 3pm and 6pm today couldn't get on-line with O2 (assume the world and SWMBO's were on-line shopping for xmas) but the BT dongle access was still excellent.

I'm not prepared to pay for a service that I can't use - although accepting maintenance downtime and the occasional failure that can occur (so will probably return O2 and then try Vodafone).

In Lymington ...

...it's dire.

In LYH, living aboard I had arguments with OW and Wifi Spark, due to their unusable coverage - finally resolved by me purchasing one of their boosters.

In Berthon, Wifi Spark pulled the plug on Oceanwave when Spectrum took over about two weeks ago and it hasnt worked since. Spectrum reckon the hardware is not compatible with their service, with no sign of a fix.

Oceanwave

Basically want to know how good it is for you users out there, value for money, etc.

Plus; anyone know if it is bundled with any dongle providers?

Emsworth Yt Hbr recently went OW/Spectrum, but our 3 dongle works ok there most states of tide except dead LW. Tried EYH OW/S in free period, but no better, and not usable outside marinas.

I got a 3 dongle as a result of advice from this forum about 2/3 seasons ago- has worked ok most of Solent/South Coast, even France(pricey, mind!).

i'd say a dongle from 3 or another Coy with good UK coverage is your best bet.
Anyone know if Orange has cheaper rates in EU- something about 'roaming partners' in Europe on teir Website'?

We had Ocean Wave here at Lowetoft and, to be frank, I am glad they went tits up.

The arrogance and service from the Guvnor, Jon, I think his name was, was abbysmal, put up with it for a while then went for the Vodaphone dongle.

Far more practical and cheaper too.

I should say here that I don't like to see any company go bellyup for the want of trying, but this lot did'nt try very hard.

Oceanwave Update

Hi all,

Just thought i would give you an update with what is happening at Oceanwave.
Firstly, Oceanwave was put into liquidation last month after the costs of managing the network became far too high. Maintaining an outdoor wifi network is a very expensive and complicated task.
All sites are now being managed and upgraded by Spectrum Interactive. This will lead to over 30 engineers managing the network (instead of my 3) and a much improved billing system. The helpdesk is now 6am til midnight 365 days a year.
Thank you for some of your comments I did take note. Also I have probably spoken to most of you in the past when trying to help with logging on etc.

One message: Pennycar9 at Lowestoft, the reason your site doesnt work well is down to the overpowered 2.4ghz Siemens Electric wireless meter reader which obliterates the Wifi signal for over 300 metres, so please do not put it down to me.

I now work for Spectrum and will be managing the growth of this network. We are making our way around all the sites and generally overhauling and upgrading for next season.

Thanks

Jon
