J, you can usually do better that that if you specify carefully, use a silky fabric so you can have plenty of folds, and have 100mm of "wall" above the window - see 0:53 of this video, and these are Oceanair electric Roman blinds

Why not leave the aircon on? Or do you mean at anchor?

I mean both really. Yes sure at anchor overnight you need screens across any open portholes to keep the critters out but also in the marina during Spring/Autumn when its not warm enough at night to have the aircon on but you want a bit of breeze in the cabins. We have a rule on our boat. If anybody opens a porthole at night, they must install the screen
