Hello I’m about to complete on the purchase of a new to me Princess 54 Fly which I’m berthing at Ocean Village. OV seem to be having difficulty telling me whether I’ll be able to plug in my two 30A shore cables (one for air con/heating, the other for domestic). They have confirmed there will be one 30A connection, but I would have thought the need to plug in two 30A leads would be standard. Any ideas?

You may find that only a few berths have that available. So you might need to take the berth offered and go on a waiting list for one with 2x 32A. Depending on your load you might be OK using a splitter and running the whole boat off one 32A but you'd have to work out your demand to ensure you stay under the 32A.

As an observation in many Uk marinas, 1 x 16a is “standard” a 30a is nice to have but 2 x 30a quite rare, usually by request if the marina infrastructure can cope. With many boats becoming more power hungry and installation of EV charging points I would imagine there will be some expensive updates coming for some marinas soon.

I think some of the new "VIP" berths at OV are geared up for it, they have some pretty sizeable boats in there so sure this isnt a new request for them?

lovely boat by the way, will look out for you when we bring our little toy boat around for dinner!

Yes we’re in the “premium” berths as those are the only ones they have available so was pleased when they said they could accommodate our shore power needs! Thank you! Do say hello if we’re there!

Prepared to be shocked by the MDL price for electricity.... There is a thread on the MDL forum where they struggle to explain why it is so expensive, when allegedly it is at cost plus an admin fee. Seemingly they blame the Yattendon Group (who own MDL) for negotiating such an appalling bad deal.

We have a P50 Mk3 fly which runs reverse cycle a/c and an electric galley. I visit OV quite a few times in the year for charter staying overnight and find we run quite happily on a single 32Amp supply split into a pair of 16 amp feeds to the respective 16amp inputs on the boat.

You won’t get 2 32 Amp supplies in the UK and frankly you shouldn’t need them on a 55 footer. Learn to manage your usage and if all else fails during meal time prep on a winters day when you MUST run the water heater flick it over to your generator for a bit.

it’s really easy to manage power consumption. Think about when you run the water heater and battery charger. Turn off areas of the climate control, watch for kettles, hair driers and the electric hob clashing etc.

Enjoy your boat ?

Henry. I agree as we run on 32a without issue, however given any boat of any size has has 2x32 or 2x64a inputs for many years it is a bit odd ( well crap ) that the marinas can’t be bothered to upgrade

Wise words - thank you. We were always able to connect both 32A on our former boat in Mallorca so just scoping out what is normal in the UK for our new closer to home boating adventure! P50 MK 3 is a beautiful boat!
