Hi,

Considering a move and wondered what it was like at Ocean Village.

Are there any positions to be avoided? (berths that is /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif)
What is the traffic like getting down from the M3/M27?
How long to the Sea, 20 mins?
Any other key points?

Thanks in advance

D

Hi,

Although i'm no expert on Ocean Village, i've found it to be a good little marina with a good mix of restaurants, friendly marina staff and a well presented yacht club. It's just lacking:

Ship chandler: Closest is Shamrock quay ( 5 mins in the car)
Fuel : closest is Hythe or the Hamble
It takes about 10 minutes to reach the solent on the rib.

The marina is still going through a development phase, with a 5 star hotel due to be built later this year on the waterfront. Expect the possibility of some building work, try and avoid the north side.
Access form the M3 isn't too bad although traffic on the M3 in peak times is a little slow to say the least (like any motorway), only between June-September there is the holiday traffic.

Good point..forgot about that. I'm used to tanking the outboard for which i think the closest is Hythe. Although i'd head for Yarmouth because it's cheaper!

We were there for a year, it was a building site then and I hear its a building site now. Boat was usually covered in dust when we came down. Plus points are easy access from the motorway and lots of eateries within walking distance. Negatives are lack of boating facilities (no chandlery or engineers on site), but main one is that its a long cruise to open sea, takes best part of an hour to the Needles even on a planing boat.

Thanks for all the replies

I think it can be handy to have the chandlery on site, you know it might be expensive but you usually need the part right now!

Hadn't thought about the dust, bad enough with sand loaded rain. The facilities sound tempting though. I have a long run to the sea now. 7 miles at 7kts and loads of 4-5kts yachts in between /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif At least you can plane on Southampton water

Yarmouth? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Don't you mean Lymington? I topped up in Yarmouth a couple of weeks ago only because I was low.. 50P per litre!

Lymington gets nearer 40P with quantity breaks.

We were at Ocean Village for 5 years before moving out to Torquay this Easter, and we enjoyed every minute there. Some of the major points:
Staff are very friendly and helpful.
No locks or river currents to deal with, and always plenty of water.
Plenty of places to eat/drink locally.
10 minutes walk into town.
10 minutes from non restricted water.
5 minutes from fuel at Itchen Marine, which is a cheap as most places.
Easy to get to from M3, especially if you learn a few back roads from the Eastleigh exit.
South side 15% cheaper than North side, but I would recommend the North side as it has already gone through its "Building Site" phase, and is better placed for most entertainment.
No swindlery or Mechanics, but readily available at Shamrock Quay (2-3 minutes in car).
Winter ashore available at Shamrock or Saxon Wharf.

Terry.

sorry yes..Lymington is also cheap and did offer a discount above 100 litres i think. But last time i fueled Yarmouth was definitely the cheapest for petrol.

It's a lot better than it used to be. The bars are expensive by Southampton standards, so the younger, louder drinkers tend to head into town. The food is good in both bars, but you can get similar quality for less if you explore Oxford street, which is 5 minutes walk from OV.

I have been berthing there for 5 years and wouldnt change.

if you use the m3 to get to the boat then its the easiest to reach.

Re the dust - If you complain to the builder then I have the feeling they will wash your boat down for you!!

I'm at OV. Just moved in this year. I like it.

I slept onboard once on a Friday and it was deathly quiet.

The only snag for me is I chose the cheap side that does not connect directly to the marina office and has only a small carpark nearby that is often full so I have a long walk to the boat or office but I just remind myself of the £700 I saved as I'm walking. I looked at Universal on the Hamble but, apart from the cost putting me off, the walk to the best located berths was miles. If you choose the posh side the car parks are quite close and usually have room.

There is a nice little Tesco that does good sarnies etc for your picnic. A chandler would be good but Shamrock is very nearby.

No problem with South side. All the naughty boys are there - me, Planty, MarkC, philf etc.

Hotel building not started yet, but multi storey carpark should be finished by September, in time for boat show.
Don't know about arrangements for parking yet for the marina. Talk of "unloading area" with plenty of trolleys - but need to be convinced. (MDL - how about hundreds of electric golf trolleys, one for each berth?)

Staff good - helpful etc as has been said before.

24 hr access - easy run down from Midlands/Oxford providing no accidents on A34 - friendly berth holders ( even raggies ).

Agree with most of the above (below?). We're on South side, which turned out to be 15% cheaper and a lot quieter. No sign of muck from the building site yet, but it is a bit of a hike from K pontoon (we were on F, next to MarkC). Staff are very, very helpful - was on board in the week a while back and they rang me on the mobile to tell me I'd left a window open and it looked like rain!

Shamrock is fine for the swindlers, DIY shops, Maplin etc reasonably close for the other stuff, and loads of places to go/eat in town.

The only issue I have is that some tw*t keeps leaving his bin bags on the bridgehead by Pacific Close rather than taking them to the bin and the seagulls keep ripping them open!

You've spotted it too. Can hardly miss it. If I catch the person concerned I'll [ this bit deleted in the interest female readers ]

Also on K but down the bottom, just inside hammerhead.
