Ocean Village Development approved

Years ago there was some building work at Brighton Marina that involved cutting sheet metal roofing at height; the resulting metal dust blew on to nearby boats, including mine - and promptly bled rust into the grp topsides. Nightmare to try and get rid of it.

Cheers
Jimmy

As I'm on top of the racking I get the seagull poo but so far no blackberries.

At home we get red bird poo when they're eating the mulberry berries

That's a reall bugger to clean off.

DAKA is right, the stuff that will get on your boat will be a nightmare!

We were berthed right at the end of A pontoon for a number of years and were in direct line of all the **** that would come from the building site last time it was looking like the development would go ahead. MDL said they would wash the boat down once a month (it may have been week??) but even so, concrete dust and such will not do anything on your boat any good even for a few days, especially if it gets walked on, rubbed in etc etc. We told them at the time that we weren't happy with their offer.

Didn't happen in the end. We left anyway after they moved us out of our berth so they could get a bigger boat in

When we berthed at portishead there was a lot of building work going on. I will never berth near a building site again. I was constantly cleaning the grime and grit. It tracked in and got everywhere. Rather pay more and stear clear. Be nice when it is all finished though.

Having checked garys link, I'm fairly optimistic

Notwithstanding the aggravation of any possible airborne muck from any building work, I think that for those of us who choose Ocean Village for the close waterside urban conveniences of bars, cinemas, restaurants etc it all looks very exciting. Hope that we are still there when it's completed. Looks a bit like port Solent without the lock.

And when I want some peace I shall go and anchor in Chichester harbour or behind beaulieu spit or just past the Folly. All are within an easy day sail from Ocean Village.

But in the meantime, I clearly need to organise regular boat washes. Or a big tarpaulin.

Cheers

Harold, one of the key things I spotted in the detail was work not commencing until the autumn at the earliest so I'll just sit back and enjoy the summer when it arrives and keep an eye on things out of season when the building works start

Ooooh dear.

We just had a letter from Ocean Village to let us know about all upcoming events and happenings and....

Later this year they will begin the construction of the hotel near the centre of the marina, and at about the same time, the construction of the blocks of flats on the north edge of the marina, next to Banana Wharf.

So, it looks like it will be a dusty, dirty winter for us Ocean Village berth holders. Let's hope it rains a lot. Or maybe it's time to order a really huge made-to-measure tarpaulin for the winter cover-up.

Cheers

The dust will settle under your tarpaulin and you will have effectively covered your boat in emery paper which is constantly agitated by the wind , some areas of gel will be rubbed all the way through to the matting.

I am not sure how effective the shrink wrap covers are, the residents association should be asking about this and demanding one each.

Premier marinas allow you to change marinas mid contract, not sure if MDL do or not but I would be asking and grabbing an empty berth in Mercury/Hamble quick before all the vacancies go !

certainly that is the time to take advantage of MDL's freedom berthing.... so a move across to the Hamble for a few months sounds the solution to me...

Good idea except, I think that either the hotel build or the block of flats build will prob take at least a year, I'd have thought.

well there's no limit for you to go to Hythe... but the PITA that is the lock...

I wonder if you approached MDL at OV with the suggestion that when the building work commences if the peace and tranquillity of OV is disrupted and boats are becoming dirty and spoilt as a direct result of the construction then special dispensation should be made so that you and anyone else at OV could move their boat to any one of the 3 Hamble MDL sites for no extra charge...... they certainly have the space... (otherwise I would suggest you would have to consider moving away from MDL entirely...)

let me know how you get on... I might move to OV next year..:D
